I am saddened by sudden news of my precious guru, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
Today 23 April in the morning, while I was in a short meditation retreat, I received an email from Venerable Roger, who is Lama Zopa Rinpoche's attendant for many years, that he received an important advice from Khandro-la yesterday that Medicine Buddha puja and recitation of the mantra of the Long Life deities such as White Tara and Amitayus need to be done the soonest possible for Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s health and long life. Venerable Roger has requested disciples and students of Rinpoche to make strong prayers at this crucial time.
And this evening, I received urgent news from FPMT and Amitabha Buddhist Centre that Lama Zopa Rinpoche had manifested a stroke and has temporarily lost some movement of his right side and his speech impaired. Rinpoche is currently in Australia, supposedly giving teachings and initiations this entire month of April. Right now, Rinpoche is in the hospital for observation. Apart from Rinpoche’s right side and speech being affected, Rinpoche seems in good humor and is doing his prayers in the hospital. An altar has been set up with prayer wheel, thangka and text so that Rinpoche can do his prayers.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been informed of Rinpoche’s situation and high Lamas close to Rinpoche are all doing pujas as well as Kopan Monastery. All FPMT centres worldwide and students have been asked to do the main practice of Medicine Buddha puja and to recite the mantras of the Long Life Deities such as White Tara and Amitayus.
The mantras are:

ABC will be organising two sessions of MEDICINE BUDDHA PUJA together with the RECITATION OF LONG LIFE MANTRAS at very short notice to pray for the long and healthy life of Lama Zopa Rinpoche:1. Sunday 24 April at 3:30 pm
2. Monday 25 April at 7:30 pm
Rinpoche always emphasize the importance of practice, no matter what obstacles one is facing. And I know he will still continue to do his practice and be the inspiring, tireless teacher no matter what obstacles or sickness. May my precious guru Lama Zopa Rinpoche recover swiftly. May all obstacles to his health be eradicated as soon as possible and may he live long.
|Lama Zopa Rinpoche in Australia, April 2011|
Lama Zopa Rinpoche, "All seek liberation and the ultimate peerless happiness of full enlightenment. Everybody is gathering here for sentient beings, for Dharma, to subdue one's own mind and to actualize bodhichitta, the most important thing in life, the most important project in life. On the basis of that, to actualize the resultant vehicle – the Secret Vajrayana – and to liberate numberless sentient beings from oceans of samsaric sufferings and bring them to full enlightenment, that is the ultimate goal of our life. I don't have any qualities to help with that, but I know two or three words – the Buddha's words. We will see what happens, maybe something crazy. You never know where it leads."
