Diluting the effects

Sometimes I hear family members or friends bitterly lament of having to suffer some grave "injustice" when they encounter a phase of bad luck.

A close relative is suffering for many years ever since she married her husband, a good-for-nothing who does not work, borrows money from others, pawned off his wife's jewellery. She is supporting the whole family. She was told nothing can be done as this is her destiny, her karma. No one, even her children, can help her as its her karma accumulated from past lives, perhaps owing to this husband of hers.

Another friend whose business crumbled, and is facing law suits, has been bitter because she feels she has not done anything to anyone to deserve such a bad situation, in terms of her business and relationship. She too has been told its her karma, and she needed to do her something to "repay" her debts of her past lives, in order to avert more trouble.

As Shen Shi'an put it: "It is much wiser to believe in the impartial law of moral cause and effect (karma) than not to. After all, in nature, we reap only the fruits borne of the seeds we sow - not random fruits. It makes more sense to believe in karma. The immoral tend to be caught by the human law anyway - a means through which karma manifests! It is worth noting too, that no experience is totally "good" or "bad" - since each can lead to the other eventually. Doing good brings its own happiness in the moment, as we rejoice in bringing happiness to others."

"Can karma be inherited? While there is collective or common karma that binds a family together, every individual creates and bears "uncommon" personal karma too. Buddhist or not, bad things can happen to good families. Then again, if we are truly good, we would be Buddhas already! Surely, we have the burden of negative karma (created in this and previous lives) which bears fruits occasionally, even as we do good. Good karma too, might not ripen as timely as we wish, or in ways we wish - when it isn't good enough! Experiencing "injustice" badly also means we are not well-practised enough to trust the law of karma, which ensures moral justice."

"Anyway, whether one believes in karma or not, surely, it is not healthy to be bitter about "injustice" or to believe the world is a completely injust place. We will definitely not be better off if we cease doing good - for goodness' sake or to dilute the ill effects of negative karma. Strive on doing good!"

Meeting Her

Last Saturday I woke up at about 3am and could not get back to sleep. Somehow I automatically sat up and started saying my Guru Yoga prayers. When I finished, I didn't know why I started chanting "Om mani padme hum" as well, and then after which I sang the slightly longer "Great Compassion mantra" in Tibetan, the mantra of Avalokiteshvara.

Then I fell asleep peacefully again. When I woke up in the morning, I suddenly remembered it was actually GuanYin's birthday. She is the Chinese Goddess of Mercy, the equivalent of the Compassion Buddha, 1000-arm Chenresig and the 4-arm Avalokiteshvara. I was surprised yet felt full of bliss.

Then last night, I had a dream. I was in a huge scenic green valley surrounded by beautiful mountains and cool breeze. I saw meandering roads with the occasional cabs passing by (strangely the cabs looked a misfit in the beautiful place). Then as I walked along, I saw a huge tentage with many Tibetan prayer flags hanging gently with the wind blowing. It seemed that an event was going to begin soon or it has just ended, so there was no one around, but the thangkas and prayer flags were hanging there. As I walked on, I saw many empty chairs neatly arranged in many rows. Then I saw a huge stage in front. On the stage was a huge statue of a white-robe Guan Yin, Goddess of Mercy. I saw myself bowing to her.

Then I carried on walking, could not remember the many things I saw. I decided to take a cab, as I was about to flag down a coming cab, I noticed a lady and a little girl behind me. The lady was very beautiful and the girl looked about 7 years old. I let them have my cab instead. Just as the lady walked passed me with the little girl onto the cab, she called out my name in a firm confident voice, and then said "thank you!" smiling brightly.

After awhile, a huge vehicle stopped for me to get on. When I was up there, I discovered it was a very long and huge vehicle (more like a train). There was an exact replica of a kitchen on it, with lots of food on a few tables and a few lady chefs busy cooking and chatting away happily. It was like a whole restaurant on wheels!

This is again one of those strange dreams which I do not understand the meaning. But then again, I am happy that I had met Buddha again, albeit in a dream. :-)

Endure

Inspirational Quote:

"When we see ourselves in a situation which must be endured and gone through, it is best to make up our minds to it, meet it with firmness, and accommodate everything to it in the best way practicable. This lessens the evil, while fretting and fuming only serves to increase your

5 Highs

Tonight my niece and nephew had 5 "highs" for the day. After work, brought them out for a short while, but it was a "high" outing for them.

First "high" - brought them to the library which they enjoyed running and searching for books to borrow, and also I read a few interesting books to them.

2nd "high" - after that, gave them a choice of their favourite places for dinner. They chose Yoshinoya excitedly, because they simply love the prawn fritters there. Also ordered for them the teriyaka chicken and beef rice set complete with soup and their favourite chilled soya bean milk.

3rd "high" - after dinner, brought them to the department store which had the Hush Hush brand in a corner which has a kids play and TV area. They played Lego and watched Mr Bean in cartoon. I knew that this little play area was one of their favourite haunts.

4th "high" - brought them to the toys section where they "wooh" and "wah" and "ah" about the toys they like and discover the latest toys in town. Saw the "Littlest Pets" and their eyes shone brightly. So I told them they could each choose one little pet to "take care of". Raee chose a little white rabbit with a cute pink basket that comes with a milk bottle and comb. Raegan chose a little black cat with a little hamster that comes with a hollow plastic ball which the hamster can play in.

5th "high" - last stop: McDonalds for milkshake! They have relaunched their milkshake after more than a decade hiatus. So the kids had been wanting to try the strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate flavours. So I bought all 3 flavours and they happily slurped and sipped them up while in the car on the way back.

Suddenly they turned to me and said: "thank you, yee yee!! thank you for everything!! thank you for buying us all the things!! thank you thank you ......!" Such innocent remarks made my day. No matter how poor I may be or how sad I may be at any point, I am ever willing to splurge on them. Because ...they are kids only once.

Nirvana Day

Today is Buddha's Nirvana day. Nirvana Day is the celebration of Buddha's death when he reached total Nirvana, at the age of 80. On Nirvana Day, Buddhists think about their lives and how they can work towards gaining the perfect peace of Nirvana. Nirvana is believed to be the end of rebirth and is the ultimate aim of Buddhism. It is reached when all want and suffering is gone. Today is also where merits multiply many times. So create more merits, huh?

Mental state (stale) of mind

Today's annual company meeting left me so tired. Disappointment. Sadness.

The boss said map yourselves into the company's plans. Set yourself a vision and goals and map them with the company and the company will help you grow. The usual cock and bull story. Nothing more inspiring. It might be for the younger ones, fresh from school, with the high hopes of being the CEO the next day.

The older ones, or rather more senior ones, can only wish so much. In all my years of working I have learnt that to climb the corporate ladder a tad faster, one has to laugh loudly, talk louder and being a machine gun also helps, be nasty and demanding, be able to delegate and relinquish all responsibilities, complain more often, learn to pass the ball faster..... And also, to be able to promise sales figures that would make Bill Gates proud, versus actual sales figures worse than the chicken rice seller.

The nice quiet guy won't last long. No matter how, its always "your unit is performing the worst". No matter how hard I try to be nasty, I can't do it. I think I am probably the lowest paid MBA holder in the world. That paper qualification to me is equivalent to peanuts right now. Lelong, anyone?

The miracle !!!

Got en email from BB about the miracle we experienced from Paltrul Rinpoche. Here it is:
Dear Friends,

All friends @ CAS are awfully glad to share with all the unbelievable manifestation of the Buddha's blessings during our programme with the realized Master -- Paltrul Rinpoche in Singapore last month --

Seeing it of great benefit to the holy Teachings and all mother sentient beings, the great Realized Teacher, Paltrul Rinpoche, in front of 500 plus fortunate students at the overflowed Ngee Ann Cultural Center in our beautiful Singapore, over a span of 2 days, manifested "miraculous" activities as He literally plucked or took relics out of thin air, manifested holy relics from His mouth, crown during the Grand Puja of Lord Buddha Amitabha according to the rare and precious Terma Cycle of Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok -- a main Nyingma Teacher of HH the present Dalai Lama --

Just before the last 2 days of the Grand Puja, Rinpoche privately told our friends that great signs will manifest --

During that very afternoon, right in front of the students, one huge relic spontaneously manifested at the holy crown of Paltrul Rinpoche who is the officiating Master of the puja. Everyone was too astonished to make any move or remark. Not long after, Rinpoche stopped His prayers and manifested another huge white, blessed relic from His Mouth. Rinpoche then explained to all, the significance and merits of holy relics ...... that they are physical personification of the perfections of Enlighten Buddhahood.

Following, relics continuously manifested spontaneously in the holy texts of the participants, on the floor in front of participants, around the holy shrine, on Rinpoche's throne, from the Buddha statues on the shrine, in front of and from the holy pictures of Rinpoche's Teacher, Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok, throughout the next of the last two days, throughout the great Initiation of the Great Protector of the Dharma -- the Ganapati -- and definitely during the Great Initiation of Lord Buddha Amitabha.

Just before the initiation of Ganapati, Rinpoche entered the auditorium and prostrated to the holy stupa containing the Heart Relic of the great Drikung Kyobpa, in front of which is placed the holy picture of Rinpoche's Teacher.

With blissful joy, Rinpoche glanced back to the hundreds of students behind Him, offered a smile and hastened up the throne of the stage and right where Rinpoche prostrated, in front of hundreds, 20 over holy relics manifested on the ground ...... eager hands reached out and efficiently swooped them off as supports for their own practices.

Then, halfway through giving blessings during the great initiation of Lord Buddha Amitabha, Rinpoche called BB @ CAS over and gleefully showed Him one pure white relic that manifested at the tip of His holy tongue, a relic that manifested from empty space in front of bb's puffy eyes. Seconds later, Rinpoche motioned BB over again, and this time 3 more relics manifested at the tip of Rinpoche's tongue and Rinpoche "dropped" these 4 holy relics ( altogether ) onto the palms of BB. Unmistakable warmth and bliss literally glowed from the relics.

To a few students, Rinpoche reached out into space in front Him and took out, again in front of the overflowed auditorium, white, shiny, holy relics. We estimated that there could not be less than a hundred relics all participants received through one way or another.

Previously, from within solid rocks, again with thousands of devotees as witnesses, Rinpoche retrieved sacred Terma -- holy Treasures hidden by Guru Padmasambhava centuries ago as supports for beings of this age -- one of which, a sacred Kilaya, Rinpoche brought along to Singapore --

At Malaysia, in 2005 November, Rinpoche joyfully pressed His hand into solid rock in front of hundreds of His fortunate students --

Again and again, to all the participants, Rinpoche seemingly manifested effortless "miracles" through appearances of relics in front of their very eyes, recounting of their innermost thoughts with so much understanding, acceptance and compassion and dispenses pointing-out advice from within His realized Enlightened Essence, dispensing blessings ever so selflessly, it healed wounds scarred by aeons of pitiful and lost wanderings in samsara, as well as giving His very heart and being to all.

A young, deeply compassionate, highly-realized and handsome recognized incarnation of the author of one of the greatest classics of Tibetan Buddhism --- "Words of my Perfect Teacher", a text that even HH the Dalai Lama taught from and which great luminaries like the present Karmapa, almost all the Nyingma and Kagyu Masters and the Ganden Tripas received teachings from, Paltrul Rinpoche, has completely manifested the inconceivable qualities of Enlightenment throughout His amazing holy activities in Tibet, China and even now in Malaysia and Singapore ......!!

Of course, the world has heard much of New Age Gurus pulling grapes out of thin air, gushed torrents of healing liquid from empty vases [ think --the Sai Baba..... !! ], in addition to holy Masters who easily read minds of fortunate disciples like an open book and who occasionally left initiation-vases standing in the air, [ Paltrul Rinpoche's very own Teachers -- the Enlightened Achuk Rinpoche and HH Penor Rinpoche ] this should, however, we believe, one of the very first times that "miracles" as such have been witnessed first-hand by all the truly blessed few hundred beings who attended Paltrul Rinpoche's programme in SINGAPORE ....... !!

Transcending displays as such, Paltrul Rinpoche should rightfully be counted as the Buddha's true-blooded noble Sangha, living up to Himself as authentic incarnation of the humble and holy first incarnation of Paltrul Rinpoche, through His utterly "non-attachment" to all material lustings, praise and blame and all worldly affairs ........

This, of course, according to the Buddha's Teachings, as enshrined in the holy scriptures, are indeed worthy models and greater "miracles" -- both of which, "greater" or "lesser" miracles, Paltrul Rinpoche has more than fairly manifested to all --

Paltrul Rinpoche amazes all --- or perhaps should never have amazed anyone !! -- as being how much He is like His great predecessor, the "original" Paltrul Rinpoche who wanders incognito throughout the length and breadth of Tibet, as a completely poverty-stricken, owner-less great practitioner who cares only to benefit anyone with the right karmic link --

No beings who attended Paltrul Rinpoche's programme, spoke to Him, who received Rinpoche's highly eloquent and blessed teachings could ever fail to recognize Rinpoche for who He really is ...... His untiring encouragement to all to aspire to seek final liberation from samasara by seeking rebirth into the Pure Land of Lord Buddha Amitabha and the means to get there: impeccable Faith / Aspiration and Conduct --

Just as with the present Dalai Lama's Nyingma Teacher, Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok, Paltrul Rinpoche's own Teacher, Rinpoche gave His commitment to all beings who participated in the programme and who forged a connection to Him, to liberate them at the time of death, if, of course, they hold their bonds and commitments and not ( further hence ) commit the Five Heinous Actions --

All the beings @ CAS should rightfully exclaim their dreadful honour to be of service to this realized Master --

BB and all friends @ CAS

Water vs Gameboy

My sis was commenting to her maid one day, asking her be careful not to waste too much water as the bill was exceptionally high that month ( more than $100). The next day, my cheeky 4-year-old nephew Raegan, was playing with water during bath time and apparently defied the maid's attempts to stop him. When the maid asked him not to waste water, he answered nonchalantly : "Aunty, do you know how much is a Game Boy? It's more than $200. So water is much cheaper!" The maid was so stunned. So were the rest of us!

Gastric

After a bout of flu and sore throat last week, I had been feeling very tired and sleepy at the end of the day. Yesterday my condition got worse, I felt giddy and nauseous and bloated from even a bit of food. Felt my body was full of wind churning inside. Dragged myself to the office in the morning but by lunch time, the giddiness has gotten so bad that I had to rush to see my regular GP. And the whole afternoon, I was knocked out in deep sleep.

I discovered all these are symptoms of gastritis. This is the first time I am diagnosed with gastritis and I was surprised. Have I been having irregular meals? Come to think of it, maybe I have. Weekdays at least 2 to 3 nights I would be working late in the office having stressful sometimes unfruitful meetings. Then I will take dinner at about 9, 10 pm. Sometimes when I attended dharma programs in the weekday evenings, dinner will be late too. Also sometimes, I will skip lunch because it was just too hot outside, or I will have it in the late afternoon. Hence my meal times have gone haywire. In addition, I had to have coffee every morning, sometimes going without breakfast. Which perhaps made it worse.

I have never had the experience of feeling nauseous all the time and being giddy made it worse. I thought it was due to my hectic program last week. Anyway, I have to make sure I take regular meals now, stop drinking coffee for a while, and have little snacks on standby. I also have to avoid spicy or sour food which can irritate the stomach lining further. I have to re-adjust my lifestyle for now... towards a healthier one.
