His Holiness Dalai Lama's award

On 17 Oct 2007, His Holiness the Dalai Lama received the Congressional Gold Medal, America's highest civilian honor, in a ceremony presented to him by President George Bush. The award is a special gold medal by Congress to His Holiness in recognition of his contributions to peace, non-violence, human rights, and religious understanding.

The award has a picture of His Holiness on one side and says on the other side,
"World peace must be developed from inner peace.
Peace is not the absence of violence.
Peace is the manifestation of human compassion."
