Beautiful love,

Hearing these songs in S-POP ...

Beautiful Love ( Tanya Chua)
Love’s beautiful, so beautiful
Love’s beautiful, so beautiful

Wahlau, your house or mine?

As I said, everything is doing well with my renovations although I'm a bit busy. What I don't like were the comments from some about the renovations. You see, many of my neighbours are also moving about the same time, and hence they are also doing renovations. Even passerbys who are strangers dropped by our new house to have a look and probably to learn some ideas. And because my parents are excited about the new house, they may probably have said too much sometimes to friends and relatives, who are constantly calling to check the status of our renovation works. Some even dropped in at our new house (without us present!!!) when the workers were there working and came back with comments for us about "wow your kitchen is so small, but the living room is huge" and "why did you choose your tiles this design?" and "why didn't you laminate the floors in your bedrooms" etc.etc. On top of this, all those strangers and neighbours also sometimes barged into the new house while we were there without having the courtesy to ask for permission to view the house. Some even called their friends and friends' friends to come together! I am not a selfish person and normally obliged but I felt they should at least have the courtesy to ask for permission, and they just stayed too long for my comfort and discussing among themselves about their own renovation! And some of these strangers have even more comments "I don't like the main door too near the kitchen", "your window grills do not look sturdy enough", "why don't you have a sliding door instead for your bathroom?", "I dont like the false ceiling, make the room look smaller", "the layout of the house not that nice, i prefer the other one..." My parents being old, also tend to listen to others comments because they think others' ideas are always better and will afterwards keep reminding me about others' "suggestions". One neighbour's friend (who visited our house and was busy commenting) even pretended not to see my mom the next day when they bumped into each other the next day. So I have more than enough from these people especially strangers. I may seem nasty but I have to put my foot down. I can't afford to waste my time entertaining strangers who have nothing better to do. It's my house that I am staying in, not theirs. I can do what I like about the design and decor. Not that I do not support the "kampong spirit" but I felt a little of my patience wearing thin. So, lest I am accused of being unfriendly, I will try to lie low and lock up my new house door for now, and mind my own business.

Geylang sipaku Geylang!

Went with mom to temporary Geylang Serai market today and discovered lots of nice Muslim food and unusual dishes and kueh kueh we don't get to see outside, although I don't know the name of each dish. The wet market selling loads of dry stuff was interesting. I found the strings of petai shoots beautifully hanged at the stalls. I love petai stir fried with sambal and ikan bilis.

Tekong Seafood Restaurant

Today is Good Friday, and my father's birthday as well. We went to have dinner at Tekong Seafood Restaurant in Changi. Been there a few weeks ago with friends, and found the food not bad. So decided to bring the family to try. It is an old run down restaurant with a view of the sea. We had so much food we were too full to walk afterwards.
- Dark braised duck
- Sweet & sour pork ribs
- Steamed fish with chai por (huge fish tail very fresh)
- Salad prawns
- Sambal kangkong
- Lah lah clams fried with garlic
- Birthday noodle
- Mee goreng

I wanted my family to try a very very very nice vegetable dish, Manis Veggie, which was so shiok the last time I tried it. Unfortunately they do not have it today. The food was good, seafood fresh and the food costs $128 with huge portions, the only thing was ...$168 was the total bill, meaning $40 went to towels, nuts and drinks!!!!

Later we went for a stroll in Changi Beach next to the restaurant which was very breezy and cool. Nice day with family, and with nice food.
Didnt take photos because too busy eating!

Transformation

Everything is going smoothly with my renovation, albeit I am busy running around, and also bogged down by office matters as well. Each week passed by and we see the transformation quickly taking place. It is a satisfying experience, seeing your new home evolving before your eyes. The tiling done, painting first layer done, lightings installed, window grills installed. Next left is the carpentry work. Also sourcing for furniture, deciding on the design, and buying new electronic stuff, are all so satisfying. All in all, I think my renovations will finish in about 2 weeks time. So I cant wait to move!

Muffy and Siew Mai

We brought Muffy out for supper before Rich Friend flew off for a month. He ate a bite of the chicken meat we ordered, but not the Siew Mai of course! Not that he didnt want to. Muffy is as usual, the center of attraction wherever he goes. Because he is so gentle, he barely bark at all. So even strangers take to him easily. And of course he loves me.... (for feeding him snacks all the time) despite his miserly diet prescribed by his owner.

Zhang Haijie

Zhang Haijie 张海洁, the ex-anchor woman of SPH Mediaworks Channel U has returned to Mediacorp as the new anchor woman in the team. I really like Haijie when she was with Channel U which made her even more popular. I remember a period when she was doing part time broadcasting on radio with DJ Weng Wen Hong discussing about many local topics. That was the time I "noticed" her. She may look fierce or aloof and some may not take easily to her, but from what I hear her speaking casually apart from doing news, she sounded like a smart lady who knows what she wants and pursue her dreams. So, now I am back to watching chinese news on TV when she is there.

Today is an auspicious day to start renovations, so I made sure the contracter turned up to "start" work. The symbolic knocking of the hammer is important, signifying the breaking of ground and the start of a smooth renovation. The worker knocked up the kerb of my main door before delivering all the tiles up into the house. Then they brought up the sand. In actual fact, at the auspicious hour earlier, I had already "knocked" on the ground of my house. Somewhere near the front of the flat at the main windows facing East. I blessed the whole house with specially blessed Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara)'s mantra. Then I hammered on the ground a few times. Hence the ritual is completed. Here's to a smooth finish to this renovation project.

Work?

We had a company meeting today, where the management reviewed our 2007 performance and the bonus we have received @yawn@, and also looking forward, announced the 2008 targets and objectives etc..

One small issue they mentioned made me skeptical. An overtime meal of $7 will be allowed for those who worked late, an increase from $5. Its not a bad thing the company is looking into "welfare" of the staff, but lets look at the other side of the coin.

Typically those who need to work late in our company are those consultants or programmers. Let me take an example of just a programmer. He comes to work at 10.30am - we start work at 9am but somehow they are "allowed" to come late because presumably they worked late the night before. By the time he starts work, its almost 11am, but after half an hour, need to go out for a breather, a smoke with fellow programmer and perhaps have a cuppa. He comes back into office at 11.30am "to work". He walked to the sweet young things in the office to chit chat, this is called socialising, for maybe about 5 minutes. Then at about 1pm, its lunch time. He and fellow colleagues went for one and half hours lunch, because need to catch up with colleagues what. By the time he settles down "to work" again, it's almost 3pm. He walked to the sweet young things AGAIN in the office to catch up, again this is called socialising. So another 5 minutes at least wasted. By 4pm, its time for a breather again, so down he goes for a smoke and coffee ! By time he is back at 4.30pm its serious work time. All the way till 6pm, then its snack time because he is supposed to work late. So off he went again for the next 30 minutes. By 7pm its time to work again. Then its dinner time at 8pm, with the laptop still on, he goes out for dinner. And dinner is on the company, must remember to claim. Then followed by a smoke etc... by the time its 10pm (official time you are allowed to claim taxi fare), its time to call it a day.

Assuming this is a typical programmer's work day. All the "break times" aside, we have about say 30 programmers, and just assuming everyone of them comes to work at 11am and knocks off at 8pm. Hey they can still claim dinner, although they work only a typical 8 hours! That aside, assuming a programmer's pay is $2500 per month, he is paid $15 per hour. For the 30 programmers who work from 11am, 2 hours are wasted each day. For a year, this works out to be about S$ 270,000 the company lost in utilising its resources. $270,000 lost just because 30 staff comes to work 2 hours later. In addition another $63,000 the company needs to pay for the 30 staff who claimed the $7 dinner every night (assuming they work 5-day nights for the whole year everyday). Thats a total of $333,000 lost which could have resulted in more bonuses for the entire company! Damn.

PS. I am not a programmer in my company.
