Medicine Buddha - Jang Wang Puja 超度法会 for the Deceased

Remember my earlier entry on the myths of the Hungry Ghosts?  I mentioned that the only way we can assist the wandering spirits or hungry ghosts in achieving a good rebirth, is by conducting prayers for them in order to liberate them from their current state of suffering.

This coming Saturday 21 Aug at 7.30pm, Gaden Shartse Dro-Phen Ling will be conducting this special prayer session - Jang Wang - this puja (Chao Du 超度法会) is a skilful Tantric practice which is conducted when someone has passed away. This purification practice employs the power of mantra, Buddha’s Holy speech; as well as the power of meditation stabilization of the Lamas. Below are the details:

Date & Time: 1 Oct - 21 August 2010
07:00 PM to 9:30 PM
Venue: Gaden Shartse Dro-Phen Ling
Address: 12 Guillemard Lane Singapore 399878

Medicine Buddha is an enlightened being who has unbiased compassion for all living beings. He protects living beings from physical and mental sickness and other dangers and obstacles, and helps them to eradicate the three poisons – attachment, hatred, and ignorance – which are the source of all sickness and danger. He is a Buddha Doctor. Tibetan Buddhists consider the Medicine Buddha practice to be the most powerful blessing for healing, dispelling sickness and for awakening the innate healing wisdom that lies within every individual. If we rely upon Medicine Buddha with pure faith, we will be freed from rebirths in the 3 lower realms, and shall definitely receive the blessings of these attainments.

What is Jang Wang Puja?
Jang Wang Puja is a skilful Tantric practice which is conducted when someone has passed away. This purification practice employs the power of mantra, Buddha’s Holy speech; as well as the power of meditation stabilization of the Lamas. Even when the deceased is in the intermediate state transcending to lower realms of rebirth, this puja can help to change the direction of his reincarnation. The Jang Wang Puja purifies the negative actions of those who have passed away, and transfers their consciousness to a better rebirth, or even Buddha’s Pureland.

Who can participate in the Jang Wang Puja?
Anyone can participate. The Jang Wang Puja is a purification prayer ritual for both the living and deceased. It can be conducted for both the recently deceased, and even those who have passed away from a long time ago. It is a highly effective puja to cleanse away negativity of the living and the dead.

What to bring for the Jang Wang Puja?
Write the name of the deceased on the Participation Tablet
Photograph of the deceased

Geshe-la has recommended that it is best if we can obtain a photo of the deceased for the Pujas. After the Jang Wang Puja is completed, the photographs and Participation Tablets with all of the deceased names will be burnt in the fire. This act of burning is highly significant in the Jang Wang Puja, as it signifies the destruction of the self-cherishing mind of the deceased. The self-cherishing mind is the source of suffering and misery for every single being; by destroying this negative state of mind, the deceased is being freed from all sufferings and its causes.
