Bravo to 中國好聲音 The Voice of China

Recently I was listening to the current season of 中國好聲音 (The Voice of China) on Youtube and I am totally a fan, with the high calibre of the competing singers, and the humorous banter between the 4 judges - Amei, Na Ying, Harlem Yu and Wang Feng - a fantastic combination. The below are some of my favourite singers in their first qualifying rounds. And the judges love them. Totally enjoyable.

劉雅婷 - I Wanna Rock. I totally love this young 18 year old with such a lioness unique voice. Watch out for the banter between the judges towards the end. Listen to her, how she is sad about her weight and yet so confident with her singing and how supportive the judges were. I watch this fun clip a few times.

李秋澤 - 跟著感覺走. This R&B guy sings very well and seemed to have been down on his luck for a long time. His singing feels very natural and comfortable. I think he rocks!

姚貝娜 - 也許明天. She is not inexperienced, however this time she is trying to express her own style. She is quite emotional and needs to be mindful of her emotions for it can affect her singing. She has a powerful voice for a slim frame and the makings of a new idol.

張新 - Fallin. He has such a high pitched bright melodious voice that everyone thought he was a lady. He has such a supportive mother. I hope he goes into the finals.

葉秉桓 - 我愛你. He is a very giggly happy nerdy boy wearing braces yet he can sing in multiple tunes. He has been named The Prince of Changing Tunes by Amei.  One could not help but keep laughing when looking at him speak. Watch out the ending where he reprised a few other songs in his own delivery.

畢夏  - 像夢一樣自由 - She is the prettiest among the lot and with a raspy unique voice. I think she has the makings of an idol.

朱克 - 離不開你. This is one of my favourite singers, because he is charismatic. Although not that good looking, he exudes a certain charm with his delivery of this utterly sad song. Morever he scores extra points for being a single father with a 4 year old daughter, having lost his wife to a car accident a year ago.

一山还比一山高

I thoroughly enjoyed this, all the songs given a new lease of life by so many aspiring singers in the finals. Enjoy each and all songs till the end.

当时的月亮

Sharing this song 当时的月亮 by Faye Wong.... for this full moon night.
A couple of sentences in the lyrics taught impermanence ....

" 能夠呼吸的 就不能夠放在身旁...."
" 当时如果没有什么, 当时如果拥有什么, 又会怎样..."

Happy Mid-Autumn!

His shadow 他的身影

By chance, found this MTV, song delivered by my favourite idol, Tang Na 坣娜.  This is her tribute to the late Master Sheng Yen...... 他的身影 His Shadow.   A beautiful piece.

Wish

This song and lyrics are penned by a fellow Dharma brother and online blogger, Yue Heng, the ever talented music composer, lyricist, singer all rolled into one. Yue Heng is a secondary school teacher and he blogs at Three Chords And The Dhamma.

Check out his other compositions in Youtube as well. I enjoy random pieces of his creations from time to time. Enjoy. May you be happy everyday.

Words and Music by Lee Yue Heng

Even though you were never mine to lose in the first place
I still have to pick up the pieces of tears fallen from my face
But I do mean it when I say
May you be happy every day

Love won't always turn out the way that we want it to be
Because it deals so many things that we cannot see
But I do mean it when I say
May you be happy every day

Are the people friendly where you are tonight
I hope your journey will be safe and light
Coz I don’t really know
If my life is gonna flow away from you

Do your new friends accept you for who you are
I hope they can help you reach for the stars
Coz I dont really know
If my life’s gonna flow to you

Even though it has been a while since I last saw your garden
I still remember how your flowers gave the earth pardon
But I do mean it when I say
May you be happy every day
May you be happy every day
May you be happy every day

花雨夜

I am reblogging this from an earlier post. Whenever I watch this MTV again, I am immediately transported back to the time when I first saw the MTV. Years ago, when I first heard and saw 張清芳 - 花雨夜 MTV, I fell in love with the music and backdrop. I love nature, the greenery, the cascading water falls and the woods. I would love the cool weather in that place everyday.

This MTV was well shot, soothing scenery, melodious voice - pure magic. It is also great for visualisation. I once had a dream of a place which is so very similar to this place in the MTV. It just gives me a very very very very very very comfortable feeling, as if I had been there before. This is what I feel a Pureland is like.

多么凉, 多么香, 多么美.... Enjoy this, just as I did.

I don't want to talk about it

A friend whom I called "美女" shared this song in Facebook. Here's another "live" version. I usually prefer listening to live version. Besides this song, the other Rod Stewart's song I have permanently in my playlist is "Have I told you lately?".  Thanks for sharing, it brings back memories once in a while. Oldies are goldies.

Don't throw it all away

The Gibb brothers; from left, Barry, Robin, Maurice, Andy
Former Bee Gees, Robin Gibb passed away yesterday 20 May 2012, after battling cancer for a long time. He was 62. Robin follows his brothers Maurice and Andy in death, leaving eldest brother Barry as the sole survivor among the legendary Gibb Brothers.

Although the Bee Gees were before my era, I always associate them with my youngest uncle. He was their fan, I think. When I was a little kid, while staying in my grandma's house during the school vacation, I saw his room decorated with big posters of Andy Gibb. My uncle used to keep long hair (and even permed his hair curly!) and dressed exactly like Andy Gibb. Hehe...

The only Bee Gees album I ever bought was from their concert "One Night Only" in Las Vegas, 1997. I don't know why but I just love the "live" atmosphere and acoustics of that particular concert. Here's a clip of a song I like, "Don't throw it all away" during this concert. I love many of their greatest hits too. Andy Gibb, their youngest brother who passed away in 1980 at 30, made a 'special appearance' too.

May Robin Gibb have a good rebirth.

Maybe I don't wanna know the reason why
But lately you don't talk to me
Darling, I can't see me in your eyes
I hold you near but you're so far away
And it's losing you I can't believe
To watch you leave and let this feeling die
You alone are the living thing that keeps me alive
And tomorrow if I'm here without your love
You know I can't survive
Only my love can raise you high above it all

Don't throw it all away, our love, our love
Don't throw it all away, our love
Don't throw it all away, our love, our love
Don't throw it all away, our love

We can take the darkness and make if full of light
But let your love flow back to me
How can you leave and let this feeling die
This happy room will be a lonely place when you are gone
And i won't even have your shoulders for the crying on
No other women's love could be as true, I'm begging you

Don't throw it all away, our love, our love
Don't throw it all away, our love
Don't throw it all away, our love, our love
Don't throw it all away, our love

We changed the world we made it ours to hold
But dreams are made for those who really try
This losing you is real
But I still feel you here inside

Don't throw it all away, our love, our love
Don't throw it all away, our love
Don't throw it all away, our love, our love
Don't throw it all away, our love

The coffee house that long vanished

Recently the McDonald's outlet in East Coast Parkway (ECP) closed down after 30 years. Many have wonderful recollection of that place which is near the seaside, and where many spent part of their childhood hanging out there. Here is a video made in memory of ECP McDonalds.

Remembering ECP McDonald's from Colourbars Media on Vimeo.

While I do not always hang out at the ECP McDonalds, I remember a couple of odd nights there when I was chilling out with my friends many years ago.  Also I have brought my niece and nephew there during the school holidays and we would have our lunch in ECP McDonalds after cycling.

It got me thinking about those places (restaurants, fast food outlets) which I remember fondly of from the old days, and which are no longer around. One that came to mind is A&W. During secondary school days, my friends and I used to hang out at A&W for our favourite Root Beer float, curly fries, and waffles. I think many Singaporeans in their 30s-40s have been waiting for A&W to make a comeback in Singapore.

I also recalled Silver Spoon Coffee House which has long vanished since the late 80s-early 90s. Silver Spoon used to be located at Supreme House (which is the modern day Park Mall) at Penang Road in the midst of Orchard Road. In those days an 'atas' restaurant was called a 'coffee house'.  Silver Spoon was the one and only coffee house which I worked for as a waitress during the school vacation. It was a big restaurant serving mainly Western food; steak and set lunches. It was quite similar to Jack's Place but seemed more upper class in those days. I think they paid their workers slightly better than McDonalds. I was an awkward student new to the outside world. Since I was a trainee waitress, I was only permitted to serve glasses of plain water, clean the table, lay the cutleries and serve the occasional garlic bread and coffee. I was not allowed to take orders or payment from the customers. It was hard work, as I remember my arms would be aching so badly at the end of each day, after having served glasses and glasses of water on a tray everyday.

And during my stint in Silver Spoon, they would be playing a particular song daily. It was "Those were the days" by Mary Hopkins. Now, whenever I hear this song, I would remember Silver Spoon. I remember the lady boss and her elegant daughter who were so immacutely dressed. The young lady boss was pretty, had long hair, and oozed a certain charm, confidence and poise. I remember telling myself I would want to be just like her when I grow up.

"Supreme House", "Silver Spoon", "Those were the days"..... these are now just spurts of memories of the past. If you have fond memories of some particular old places, visit them again before they vanish for good.

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And think of all the great things we would do

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me?

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same...

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

如果你也听说

Her voice is simply beautiful and for her, I prefer to hear it 'live' all the time. And she cried.

Whitney Houston, we will always love you

This morning I woke up to the sudden news that legendary mega-superstar, Whitney Houston, has died at the age of 48. They do not have news of the actual cause of her death yet, but an article posted less than 24 hours ago, Whitney was caught in camera leaving a nightclub looking messy, drunk and rude, with blood dripping down her legs.  Everyone is guessing it is her addiction to drugs. And she had struggled with the addiction for many years. Such a sad ending for a talented diva who died young, just like Michael Jackson, Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung.

Whitney sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos. I am not exactly a fan of hers but during my growing up years, she has such a wholesome image and I love many of her songs... I Will Always Love You, One Moment In Time, Wanna Dance With Someone, All At Once etc..

I remember during a trip to Turkey many years ago, I was playing her "I Will Always Love You" in repeat mode all the time, until my friends, my travel mates, got so exasperated with me. Well, you either love or hate this song. Hehe.

Here's a tribute to Whitney, a 15-minute medley of 21 hit songs across 3 decades. Thanks for the lovely memories, Whitney. May you have a good rebirth.

My only wish 愿

The Healing Lama, Kangyur Rinpoche healing & giving blessings
Over the weekend in Gaden Shartse Dro-Phen Ling, a thin middle-aged lady came up to me and spoke to me. She had wanted to know how she could participate in the Medicine Buddha puja which was due to begin.  Speaking in Mandarin with an accent, I realised she is from mainland China.  Seeing her wrapped up in a long-sleeved top and a scarf around her neck in the hot weather, I knew she was not feeling well. Her eyes were downcast and dull, with slightly dark circles under her eyes, and her face was pale. Speaking to her further, she told me that ever since she went back to China to visit her ailing father who passed away thereafter, she had been sick for over a year. She had previously knew about the centre after attending the great healing pujas in 2010 when the venerable Healing Lama, Kangyur Rinpoche was in town. She has been waiting to see the Healing Lama again.

After explaining to her about the puja and how the Medicine Buddha can help her, I asked her to make her sincere request to Medicine Buddha to heal her. Also it would be beneficial for her to attend the upcoming Grand Puja on 24-26 Feb which is a series of powerful, obstacle-clearing and healing pujas for the public conducted by Gaden Shartse Monastery monks. I also hope she can attend the weekly different pujas which aid in clearing different obstacles and thus, healing her. The centre would definitely be able to help her, whatever the causes are.

I have met so many people who are facing some problems or sicknesses, whether physically or mentally, and often they do not know how to find help. Even consulting a doctor and taking medication could not heal them. We need to first determine the cause of the problem/illness, and thus be able to find the right anecdote or solution to the problem. Otherwise, we would always be running around in circles, ridden with the problem and suffering in silence.

I just heard this beautiful new song by Faye Wong, a fellow Dharma sister -  《愿》 My Only Wish - which was released on new year day. May this lady I met earlier be able to be healed as soon as possible.

Make you feel my love

One of my fav songs... Adele is a phenomenal singer, and nothing beats hearing it 'live'.

When the rain
Is blowing in your face
And the whole world
Is on your case
I could offer you
A warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When the evening shadows

And the stars appear
And there is no one there
To dry your tears
I could hold you
For a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you

Haven't made
Your mind up yet
But I would never
Do you wrong
I've known it
From the moment
That we met
No doubt in my mind
Where you belong

I'd go hungry
I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling
Down the avenue
Know there's nothing
That I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging

On the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change
Are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing
Like me yet

I could make you happy

Make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends
Of the Earth for you
To make you feel my love, To make you feel my love

No kidding, Kit Chan!

Kit Chan's solo concert, "The Music Room", is on in Singapore ! I am not there but I feel so proud whenever I see/hear her sing, especially the song, "Home". To me, she is synonymous with Singapore, a truly homebred Singaporean singer. And she is such a humble and good natured person. It is only right to watch this "live" performance with her beautiful and glamorous stage presence during Singapore's National Day Parade in 2010.

I personally like this Kit's cute rendition of Cantonese oldie 浪子心聲 by Sam Hui.  My ex boss used to mention this song and its meaningful lyrics. I would always remember this "命里有时终须有 命里无时莫强求". In gist, it means everything is pre-destined, what is meant to be, will be.

Fuzzy kinda childhood memories

So excited recently. Just got in touch with long lost classmates from primary and secondary school! We found each other through Facebook, 24 of us so far. Each of us connected and added more classmates whom we are still in contact with. We have even formed a clique in FB to share private conversations and to catch up with each other. My phone is buzzing with plenty of notification alerts whenever my friends posted something. This is personally so significant to us because it has been decades since we last saw one another. Imagine for some of us, we have known each other since Primary One! Below is a class photo of us in Primary One. Yes we were from one of the Methodist schools.
Our primary one class photo!
It is amazing we can still recall each other's names when I cannot even recall most of my classmates' names from Pre-U and MBA days. I think it is because the sweetest and innocent memories always come from our childhood.

I am most touched by one particular classmate whom I have a fond memory of. She joined my class in Primary 3 and left after Primary 6. In that short 4 years, we used to swim and play together. She also used to stay a few blocks away from me. She came from a relatively well-to-do family and she was an extremely smart girl and did very well in her studies. Yet she was very humble and did not look down on poorer kids like me.

Taken during one of our swimming lessons

After she left to join a prestigious school, both of us used to write letters to each other for a few years. I remember in some mornings, while I was walking to school, her dad's car would passed by and she would call out to me and waved at me excitedly! In one of her letters to me, she would write: "Saw you from my car this morning, waved at you but you didn't see me. How are you, my friend?"

This time when we found each other in Facebook, she said she has been looking for me for decades! She said she even went to my old house just a few years ago to have a look but suspected I had already moved. And she questioned me if I had sent her an anonymous Joker card back then. Haha! I told her I seriously could not remember anything about it.

My friend said we were sending Christmas cards for a few years and then she stopped getting a response from me at some stage, so she thought I had moved. We could have stayed in touch all these years! Every time she looked at the Joker card she would think of me. But unfortunately she had just cleared out all the old post cards and letters just hardly 2 months ago.

When I told her I had dreamt of her just 2 years ago, the same old tanned bright-eyed girl in primary school, she laughed. She said she was very honoured to be in my dream after so many years! She rekindled little details of our memories of school which I had totally forgotten. She said she remembers my "fated duty of guarding the staircase ... was it every recess? And also catching the late comers in the morning. Did you even get time to eat on those days?". I could not even recall this. In those days, I was a Prefect from primary 5 till secondary 4, and then Head Prefect.

She remembered the tiny school bookshop perched right at the top of the flight of staircase leading to our chapel hall. She wondered how come we did not walk to school together. That was because I used to be fetched to and fro from school on a trishaw! I only remember we walked home after swimming lessons. Sometimes we had stopped and buy ice cream or some snacks from the mama shop.

Our old school back then, which has since been demolished to make way for a MRT station

Our school tuckshop was so small with just 4-5 stalls. She loved the curry chap chye with bee hoon that was her favourite food for the entire year! I remember the coloured syrup drinks and all the unhealthy snacks we fed on. Not forgetting the old market at the back gate of the school. We feasted on so much sweets, chewing gum, soft drinks, and suck on those syrup ice cream in cylinder form! We even bought paper dolls from the mama shop behind the school. Haha!
Such beautiful sweet memories. My friend is based in Mumbai India now. I am waiting to meet up with her soon and with everyone else. I feel on top of the world at the moment, or at least the bunch of us are.... how apt but to play this old song from our time....back then, we felt WE ARE THE WORLD.

    Against all odds

A song of yester-years... about departure, waiting, good byes, pain of losing someone,  regrets, and..... impermanence.

"You want to know what happiness is? Look for pain and when you find the pain and begin to see it lessening, you'll find happiness. If you keep looking for happiness, you are not going to find it." - Gelek Rinpoche

How can I just let you walk away, just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you, ooh
You're the only one who really knew me at all
How can you just walk away from me, when all I can do is watch you leave
Cos we've shared the laughter and the pain and even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now, oh there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me, just the memory of your face
Ooh take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against the odds

And that's what I've got to face
I wish I could just make you turn around, turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you, so many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me, just the memory of your face
Now take a look at me now, cos there's just an empty space
But to wait for you, is all I can do and that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now, cos I'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
It's the chance I've gotta take
Take a look at me now.

    只想一生跟你走

Whenever I hear this cantonese song by Jacky Cheung, it reminds me of my Beijing trip years back. I think it was because someone sang this song at the karaoke in the hotel. Ran through 北京天坛 (Temple of Heaven) in the rain. Climbed the Great Wall. Feasted through their 满汉全席 (Imperial Royal Banquet) fit for an emperor. Saw a baby with a naked butt in Tian'anmen Square. Grinning at Marco Polo Bridge. Loved the Summer Palace. Awed by the lovelorn tree in the Forbidden City. First encounter with Lama Tsongkhapa and didn't know who he was until a decade later. Late night supper: handmade cold noodles. Lost 5kg in 5 days.  只想一生跟你走.

"In the beautiful eyes, the world appears as beautiful"

This is a short post. I just read an article about my favourite idol, the Singing Nun from Nepal, Ani Choying Drolma. I thought I had share this, the words in her song which are most beautiful:

In the eyes of flowers the world appears as flowers
In the eyes of thorns the world appears as thorns
Talking about perception - how everything depends on how we perceive things
May my heart always be pure.
May my words always be enlightened.
May the sole of my feet never kill an insect.
In the beautiful eyes the world appears as beautiful.

When asked who inspires her, she immediately responds, “Mother Theresa because she is a nun. Regardless of our differences in religion, fundamentally, we believe in the same thing: kindness and compassion.”

    Simply beautiful.

Here's my earlier post in October last year, when I spent a beautiful evening with her.

    听海

Managed to catch this performance by Amei 张惠妹 on cable TV at their countdown show. Wow, Amei is still the diva with her powerful cords, and not many singers can shine in a live recording.

Many years ago when she was just starting out, I caught her live in concert here. I am pretty selective about watching concerts, because the singer must be able to hold his/her fort with solely his/her voice alone. And Amei is one of them. She was fantastic. Listening to her rendition of this song 听海 now brings back memories of the past decade.  Watch out towards the end of the song, very high and very touched. I agree with one comment from someone: "这次的听海 让我最感动".

    后来

I just heard that Rene Liu 劉若英 is coming to town for her concert. No, I am not going to attend. I just find her a good actress and I watched almost all her movies. As for her songs, the only one song that left an impression is 后来.  I remember many years ago, after listening to this song, I wrote a short love story, and even knew how I wanted the MTV of this song to be directed, based on the love story I wrote (which is way better than her original MTV, haha!). Anyway, here is that song. Dedicating this song to all the lovers out there, whether they are deeply in love, still together, or have broken up. May you find that little solace in this song. Believe in love, always.
