Cuppa Corn

Brought my nephew out yesterday, so that he would not disturb his sister preparing for her very first exams. It was just a simple lunch, and window-shopping for his favourite toys. He has already made up his mind what he wanted in McDonalds. Chocolate sundae, McNuggets, Milo, Fries and his new-found favourite, a Cup of Corn. Quite an appetite he has recently. And talkative. In between mouthfuls, he muttered: "Yee-yee, my favourite food in McDonalds is corn and my favourite food in KFC is mashed potato."

He also added: "My mommy also cooked corn like this at home, but it doesn't taste so nice. Why ah, yee-yee?" He learnt another lesson that he must remind his mommy to add more butter next time. He also impressed me by giving me a lesson and describing how fries are made. Hmm... my little nephew is growing up.

Da Vinci Code

Contributed by Zyrius:

I would like to point out a couple of gross errors in one of the world's most popular books at the moment. On page 370 of the novel “The Da Vinci Code”, Dan Brown wrote the following, as spoken by the key character Langdon - “If you and I could dig up documentation that contradicted the holy stories of Islamic belief, Judaic belief, Buddhist belief, pagan belief, should we do that? Should we wave a flag and tell the Buddhists that we have proof the Buddha did not come from a lotus blossom? Or that Jesus was not born of a literal virgin birth? Those who truly understand their faiths understand the stories are metaphorical.”

A bestseller is not always that which sells Truth the best. The book is an entertaining story with some plausible theories though. Though some religious stories might be metaphorical, surely, not all are. And both metaphorical and literal elements can be contained in a single story.

Well, Buddhists do not believe that the Buddha was born from a lotus, but that another great Buddhist teacher, Padmasambhava, the Lotus-Born, was. Since the Lotus is a symbol of purity, it means Padmasambhava was born out of purity, not of defilements. Not sure about Jesus, but the Buddha was possibly of virgin birth, though it is believed that his Mother (Queen Maya) had tried to be be with child with King Shuddhodana previously, but with no avail. But that does not definitely means she had lost her virginity. Perhaps what truly matters is that the Queen was without lust when she had an auspicious dream one night - of a white elephant (holding a Lotus in its trunk, which circumambulated her thrice) entering her right, after which she discovered herself to be with child. The white elephant was symbolic of noble greatness, the Lotus once again meant purity, and the circumambulation denoted respect.)

The Scarlet Letter

Saw the korean movie on DVD last week, The Scarlet Letter. This movie is banned in Singapore. It's about a detective in charge of crimes of violence, with three women: obedient cellist wife and mistress having the opposite image of his wife and the victim of a murder case. If there is a conclusion, it is that in order to love someone we need to pay the price. As the film is closing to an end, the shocking secrets of the three women are revealed one by one accompanied by an unexpected twist.

The detective is leading actor Han Suk Kyu, which I found quite charismatic and attractive although he is not the typical good-looking hunk. Incidentally this movie was the last film for the mistress played by Lee Eun Ju (girl in centre), who committed suicide in Feb 2005. It was believed the movie was the contributing factor in the depression that enveloped her in the months prior to her suicide. Lee was by some reports very uncomfortable with the sexually explicit nature of her role in The Scarlet Letter. Such sad ending in real and reel life.

Spring oxygen

I suddenly realised most of the people I adore happen to be born in Spring (after the Chinese New Year, normally between late Jan to mid Feb), for example, this Oxygen Lady. And also people I know, like PL, JL, WF, SKH, TN etc... Thus ..... they are very good for me and my elements!

Frog in a well

Had a meeting with a big shot business partner today from a very well-known organisation. Of course any objectives we intended to achieve out of this discussion fell flat on our face. Funny these people (from famous IT firms) think that they are very big shots, they have a standard way of questioning and demanding to know in what ways will it be beneficial for them to work with you, without bothering to ask who you are. And then in the end gently advise you they will try to fix you up with someone else, ie. meaning they don't want to deal with you, unless you can commit an incredulous commitment. And we're not even talking of money here. Another thing is, these same people work the same way day in day out. Wonder why they are paid so much in a prestigious company yet delivering lesser efficiency than the lesser beings in ordinary firms.

Same goes to people who will question no end why things are not done, or rather why things are not done FOR them, keep asking why XXX, why YYY, why ZZZ etc.... yet they have not lifted their hands to do good old basic AAA in the first place. I think I am getting delirious with these big shots.
FFF. Eh... I only mean Frogs in a well.

Perfect-trying

This week has been busy. And in the midst of being busy, I am most touched with my job hunter who has been relentlessly calling me with opportunities, and trying to track me down even though I don't have time to talk to her or see her and even though I didn't sound the least interested in some of the jobs. Imagine getting more than 20 calls from the same person in one day. So, thanks for doing a great job, L. Hope you can find me one great job soon. Treat on me.

Met up with my very old childhood friend, B. It has been a perfect evening dining and updating each other of our happenings, interesting or non-interesting. While we may feel life has not been been exactly great with our own lives, but when we compare ourselves to most of our close friends or families, we realised we aren't doing that bad either. It's always good to catch up. She is one friend which I can confide in, and who is a good listener. Conversation goes 2-way instead of me being just a listener. At least she doesn't make me feel I have to overload her with attention and comfort. Thanks for meeting, B. We should meet up often lah.

Thank goodness for such angels.

Many a time

Many a time, a friend disappears when he is rich,
Even many times more, a friend appears when he turns poor.
But that doesn't mean my friend likes me,
It just means he needs the attention.

Many a time, a friend in need appears,
Even many times more, the friend craves my attention.
But that doesn't mean I don't like my friend;
It just means I may need the attention too.

Many a time, I saw the light,
Even many times more, I didn't.
But that doesn't mean the light is not there.
It just means that I can't see it.

Open Door

“My door is always open”, the boss said with a smile. But he did not know that a literally open door can be as welcoming to his staff, as it can be intimidating - because while it meant he is open to them, some staff prefer privacy away from the boss - separation by a closed door while they work. While the open door put some minds at ease, it brought some tension to others.

Of course, it wasn't particularly the boss's fault, or any particular staff‘s, or even the door’s - it only meant that the same thing is perceived by different people differently. Just perception at play. Sometimes, an open door is just an open door - it might not mean anything much, if anything at all. It could just mean the boss does not like a closed door.

How we chose to live

Thus we see that the all-important thing is
not killing or giving life,
drinking or not drinking,
living in the town or the country,
being lucky or unlucky,
winning or losing.
It is how we win,
how we lose,
how we live or die;
finally, how we choose.

We walk, and our religion is shown (even to the dullest and most insensitive person), in how we walk. Living in this world means choosing, and the way we choose to walk is infallibly and perfectly expressed in the walk itself. - R. H. Blyth

Happy birthday, Mom!

Today is Mom's birthday. We had celebrated her birthday earlier on Sat in a nice Teochew restaurant with Aunt Rena and the rest of the family. Tonight was just simple dinner and cake cutting. Sis and I told her that we have bought her and Dad a pair of tickets to Frances Yip concert on 13 May. Although both exclaimed it was too extravagant, I know and can see that they were touched as they have never expected this. And I felt very happy deep inside, it was worth all the other stuff I could jolly well splurge on eg. a spa package, a nice handbag etc.

The same reason goes to why I always gave priority to my Mom and Grandma if they want to go anywhere on holiday tours. I would make it a point to include them in my travels, rather than joining friends on fun-filled destinations. My reason is simple. They are getting on in age. How long could they be around, be well and kicking to be able to travel and see the world, if not at the present moment? I simply want to make them happy. Because I know I will then not regret it when I am older, or when they are gone. Even though we are Asians, who are supposed to be a conservative and traditional lot, I do not know many of my friends or acquaintances who would actually want to travel with their elderly parents.

So Happy Birthday, Mom! I wish you good health, have a long and healthy life, free from worries and tears. May you always have a clear and happy mind, and be blessed by all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas.

PS. I also wishes MLY a very happy birthday! (this person shares the same birthday as my mom).

Jasmine

My Aunt Rena came back from Thailand last week. She has not been back to Singapore for the past one and a half years. I like Aunt Rena because she is a sprightly lady with a hearty appetite for food especially snacks. She has cravings for all local food, she likes Chinese dumplings and malay kueh-kueh from Bengawan Solo etc. She also has a very big heart, very generous, very kind. Aunt Rena got married and settled in Thailand more than 30 years ago, and her family is quite affluent. She is a very pious Buddhist.

She was relating to me about how she helped to sponsor to build a huge Buddha statue many years ago. She has forgotten all about it, until her daughter brought back home a small Buddha statue. She wanted to invite Buddha to her factory. So she put the statue on the rear seat of her car very carefully. On the way there, she felt faint and could not concentrate on the road, and she kept making the wrong turns on the way to her factory, a route which she uses almost everyday. Somehow that day, she felt restless. But without warning, she suddenly saw a bright light in front of the road at a turning and she followed accordingly. Once she turned her car into that lane, she found her factory at last. She told one of her sales managers to invite Buddha to the altar inside her office. When that was done, she felt uncomfortable and uneasiness and restless and still could not work. So she finally meditated, she prayed to Buddha to pardon her if the way it was handled was not done properly and suddenly everything became clear to her, her mind alert. Her sales manager asked her afterwards where was the Buddha statue from, because he felt his whole body was burning and becoming very hot when he carried the statue, as if it was alive. Then it finally dawned upon her that the statue was from the very same temple where she had helped built. Buddhist teachings say that building holy objects reaps the merits related to the numbers of atoms the holy object consists of, which on this scale would be enormous. Hence many people will come to see it and will accumulate merit, leading them to happiness and ultimate enlightenment.

Aunt Rena told me that when she meditates, sometimes she can feel the presence of the Buddha (depending on which particular Buddha she is praying to and visualising). She can't see Buddha but she can smell his presence. It's the smell of jasmine flowers. Which leaves me with a quote from Buddha himself:

"Like a beautiful flower, full of color, but without perfume,

are the fine but fruitless words of him who does not act accordingly;
But like a beautiful flower, full of color and full of perfume,
are the fruitful words of him who acts accordingly."

Debts clearing

For the past few weeks I attended 2 sessions of puja relating to clearing karmic debts of past lifetimes - Leng Chag Torma. Since beginningless time, we have been trapped in this uncontrolled cyclic existence of samsara and have undergone countless reincarnations. Although we are unable to recall what we did in our previous lives, it is certain that we must have committed many acts of greed and hatred out of our ignorance - which explains why we are still unable to be liberated from samsara. It is also certain that we must have accumulated many debts in all these lifetimes ie. we could have owed someone money or even a mere sack of rice etc...

Through performing this puja, by offering torma to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Protectors, we are able to clear all these incurred debts. Hence partcipating in this puja will purify the negative karma that we have accumulated over the reincarnations.

Comma coma

Sms conversation:

A: U wanna go out tonight?
B: Can I guess
A: Guess what?
B: (no reply)
A: U say guess what?
B: Why u keep asking? I think answer perfectly ok, why keep asking? Wats wrong w u?
A: U sms "can I guess" and not "I guess can", how I know wat u mean?
B: (aaaarggghhh.....)
A: (aaarrrggghhh....)

Thus the importance of a comma ( , ) --- "Can, I guess"

Endearing so (Seoul)

I am hooked to Daejangguem 大长今 (Jewel Of The Palace), the Korean hit drama which stars Lee Young Ae as Jangguem. It's the first Korean drama series which I am addicted to and I am still following the nightly re-run.

Something about the charismatic Lee Young Ae, Lady Han and even the bad Lady Cui and the other ladies in the palace and the endearing story. It's so different from the usual dose of slow sobby Taiwanese dramas and impersonally commercialised Hong Kong dramas. Which is why I love it.

Same old lessons

The lessons you have not learnt will tend to re-manifest in your life every now and then. Not because there is some higher power testing you, but simply because you have not learnt them well. For instance, you might have a short temper and those around you seem to keep provoking you. These are lessons of mindfulness, objectiveness and patience missed continually. But once you learn to manage your anger, the lesser opportunities of anger seem to fade away - even when those around you have not changed - when only you have changed. - shian

Frus-cination

You would have succeeded if you manage to make yourself feel "fascinated" over irritating situations or people, instead of feeling "frustrated" all the time.

Lesson:
Every thought is a mental ripple, which can radiate into sonic waves of speech, which can manifest into physical forces of actions. Whether you know it or not, whether you like it or not, everything you do sends ripples, readily detectable or not, into the world out there, as it reverberates within.

Sometimes, it's not even a matter of what you say or do, but how you say or do it. What waves do you exude? Are they vibrations of calmness, generosity, loving-kindness and wisdom? Or are they otherwise? What effects do they have on yourself and those around you? With increased mindfulness, may we always be pure sources of goodness - as we send positive ripples which meet others' ripples - be they positive or not so. If not, how else can we ever make the world a better place? It has to start from the humblest ripples - from your best of intentions.

"Odder?"

As I grow older, I find the close friends around me getting more and more peculiar in their behavior or has their character changed? Or was it their lifestyle has changed, thus their viewpoints and mindset have also changed? Maybe I am the oddball.

Silent vs Vocal

When a couple quarrel, is it better that one party remain silent while the other party rant? Or should both parties be screaming away at each other? Or should both parties give each other the silent treatment?

While I think it's better that one party remained silent, still the other screaming party should not be ranting away unreasonably. For after the storm tides over, the "vocal" party just forget everything happened in the first place. However, the silent party is the one who remained hurt and bottled up inside. It will still burst one day.

PS. Nonetheless, I think I prefer the silent sufferer rather than the ranting madman.

Multiplying

I often have dreams, but sometimes I don't quite recall all of them.

Yesterday morning before I left for work, I offered incense to Buddha. Just as I clasped my hands together I suddenly remembered a dream I had a few days ago. The memory recall was quite abrupt but pleasant.

In the dream briefly I saw both my palms opened. Then I saw tiny white holy relics appeared on my palms. They looked exactly like the tiny white relic I had been given by Paltrul Rinpoche a month ago. That very relic which manifested from thin air. In the dream, these white relics just kept multiplying on my palms. Even when I lifted my hands, the relics kept appearing out of nowhere. As I waved my hands, the relics kept spraying all over. It reminded me of Sai Baba manifesting white holy vibhuti ash from his hand. In the dream, I remembered I was feeling overjoyed, extremely happy because I know how precious the holy relics are. And they kept mulitplying and multiplying, overflowing out of my palms.

I truly believe this is a good dream. I am quite blessed.

Backside

Boss to colleague: "We shouldn't just look good on our face, but must look good on our backside too!" to illustrate the point that we should not live beyond our means ie. no point looking good and affluent on the outside when we are actually quite poor and pathetic inside.

Lesson of the day: Backside should always look good too! :P
