Gao Luck

I like Chinese chestnuts which are coffee-roasted over a large wok. In Hokkien, these chestnuts are called "gao luck". The aroma is just too tempting. Sometimes you can find stalls selling just roasted chestnuts. The hawker will stir the huge wok of chestnuts (with shell still intact) over coffee roasted beans, which is why the smell is so fragrant. It is best eaten when it is hot but even when cold, the taste is still ok. The inside is very soft and can get addictive if you continue to munch. These days there aren't many roasted chestnut stalls left. And they have become quite expensive, each bag of 500gm costs S$4 - $5.
