出界

Sammi Cheng is coming Singapore for her concert soon.  I am not a fan of hers but heard one song on the TV advert and it had to be this song 出界 (over the border). This song sounds so eons ago now but at that point of time I really love it, especially the chorus.

Certain songs remind us of certain period of our life, or someone, or something, that's what make us so sentimental and nostalgic.  I remember years ago, I used to play 出界 in repeat mode while cycling to work or to Orchard Road.

And because of this song, I have a sudden urge to go watch her concert. Strangely, I prefer and respect her more as an actress than a singer, don't know why.  Any takers?

Dedicate this song to whoever, whichever, whatever that meant something to me once upon a time. :D

100 million times!

Today is the last day of CNY as well as last day of Tibetan Losar (new year). As I mentioned in the earlier post, today is also an auspicious day which marks Buddha Shakyamuni's Enlightenment and Parinirvana. Hence any deed or karmic action performed today will multiply by 100 million times! Please do make offerings of light or flowers or food or any offerings to the Buddha. May you be greatly blessed today.

Also for those of us celebrating Chap Goh Mei dinner (last day of CNY), have a nice dinner tonight!

Are you being backstabbed?

In the Taoist tradition, one of the deities they pray to is the Tiger God. Many individuals and businessmen pray to the Tiger God for one sole purpose. Do you know who is the Tiger God? The below is adapted from another website.

It has been a Chinese tradition that after the Lunar New Year, most Taoists worship the Tiger God to seek for safety and ward off backstabbers or troublemakers for the year. This day is known as Jing Zhe, in Chinese. It normally falls on the 6th or 7th of March.

Jing Zhe means awakening the insect. It was believed that on this day, all insects are awakening from their hibernation when a loud band of thunder strikes the earth and soon after the insects will harm the crops and the hungry tigers will hurt lives and thus people start praying for safety and good harvest by offering to the Tiger God.

And on this day, whoever wants to ward off backstabber and troublemakers will visit the temple to give offering to the Tiger God. A generous piece of raw pork, fresh duck eggs, greens beans, sesame seeds, joss stick, incense paper and offering set is used for the prayer. A handsome piece of raw pork is rubbing and placed on the Tiger’s mouth to symbolize feeding the Tiger. Throwing of green beans and sesame seeds on the ground is to chase away problems and trouble. To complete the offering, it’s to offer raw duck eggs, burning of joss sticks and incense paper of Guardians of nobility.

This year, Jing Zhe falls on 6th March 2010, 00:46 Hour.

Rosemary chicken with Panini bread

Thanks for lunch, my wonderful friend!

For the past 2 weeks, I have been taking only one main meal a day. Not on any special diet or requirement. I don't know why I had just lost appetite to eat whenever it is meal time. Maybe a spate of events that happened had affected me, I'm not sure. So  now I made the first meal of the day usually around 2pm-4pm, so that I need not have dinner in the evenings when I had to attend teachings. It was actually quite a good idea. I felt better, not bloated from heavy meals, and I actually slimmed down a little. If I were to maintain such a meal pattern, I would definitely slim down more. But alas, I'm back to normal lifestyle, and the good news is, my appetite has not gone back to normal yet. Let's wish it won't.  :)

It's His fan club I can't stand

Moonpointer, a known Buddhist blog, has provided concise clarifications of misconceptions on Pastor Rony Tan's videos on 'Buddhism". Please have a read over there of some points which were grossly misinterpreted by Pastor Rony Tan.

Now the latest I heard, there is another church who is distributing CDs to their followers,  criticising Buddha as a 'fake God'. Since when did Buddhists say Buddha is God in the first place? I am sick and tired of various groups of the Christian community who see the need to lambast and criticise other religions when they do not have a proper grasp or sound understanding of other religions from the start. The keyword is always 'RESPECT'. Leave us alone to do our own thing, and likewise yours.

As my guru mentioned during his teachings, he said if you do not understand your religion, go and ask questions and learn, then you can go deeper. If not, you can turn to the other religions, but be responsible. There is a need for different religions. Some do not have the karma to understand the Dharma. Then the other religions are more beneficial for them.

If I may quote one point from Moonpointer....

Harm of Misinterpretation
"According to Buddhism, intentional and uncorrected misinterpretation of the Buddha's teachings which endangers the spiritual lives of many can karmically lead to lower rebirths for extended periods of time. For the welfare of all beings, may all practise greater mindfulness of thought, word and deed. Amituofo".

Dragon power

While having lunch at a coffee shop, I witnessed a dragon dance, commonly seen during the chinese new year. There were at least 10 people carrying the dragon on poles.  Many  businesses invite the dragon or lions into their shops and offices during the festive season, to herald in good fortune and prosperity in business in the coming new year.  All but of symbolic significance. Dragons are believed to bring good luck to people, which is reflected in their qualities that include great power, dignity, fertility, wisdom and auspiciousness. Huat ahhh!!!!

Baby, it's cold outside

Just got back from a late night session of teachings. Nice  romantic sexy song for a quiet night to chill, by an unusual unlikely combo, Willie Nelson and Norah Jones, singing "Baby, it's cold outside". Recommended by a fellow tweet mate. Thanks, babe! :D

The pink slippers lady

It was almost 10pm and I had had a long day since 8.30am. After more than 6 hours of puja, I was a little exhausted. So at about 4pm I wanted to go somewhere to chill out and have some quiet time. Not in the mood to talk to anyone. Didn't want to go home to entertain some visiting guests too. Anyway, by the time I was done with grocery shopping, had a drink and reading a book, I was really physically tired, and was at the taxi stand. The queue was soooo long, at least 30 people in the line and hardly any cabs came by. Usually I would not have waited, but I guess I was too tired.

Right in front of me in the queue, I noticed a thin lady with short hair wearing a casual sleeveless T-shirt and bermudas and a pair of pink slippers. She was very fidgetty and she was telling 2 little girls (presumably her daughters) and maid something, after which the maid took the girls away somewhere. Then as she was standing there in the queue alone, her many actions convinced me she was 'not normal'. She could not stand still and was always moving, stamping her feet, turning her head left and right non-stop, sighing, kept shifting her shoulder bag, very exaggerated movements for a normal adult. She kept muttering "why (taxi) so long?" and she pouted. Because of her fidgetty behaviour, people around her noticed her. A lady with 2 children in front of this Pink Slippers Lady was looking at her in disdain and within a minute, she shoved her kids away from this lady and they were gone.

So many questions filled my mind, wondering about this lady, and with her condition, she still has 2 kids to take care of? I wondered what her illness was. Then she took out her mobile phone and was staring at the screen real close almost touching the screen, and kept punching numbers and staring at the screen, putting it back in her bag and then taking it out again, a few times. I think by now, many people would think she was mad or something. But when she finally made the call, she was speaking in normal mandarin but in a slightly squeaky tone. I thought, hey she is alright, apart from her exaggerated movements.

Then her 2 kids and maid came back, beautiful sweet girls who were bubbly, chatty and active. The Pink Slippers Lady hugged them and talked to her girls in English, but she has the habit of speaking very close to their cheeks, and staring at them almost touching their faces. Even to the maid, she was the same. She probably could not control her movements or something to do with the nerves. But she was friendly and obviously doted on her girls, she kept asking "did you gargle your mouth, sweetie, let mommy smell your breath" or "here drink more water, sweetie" etc... but she was not able to handle her active kids. It was only towards the last 5 minutes before her taxi came, I talked to her, complimenting her on her beautiful kids. She said "thanks.... I didn't know girls also so active, I regret....." I said it is normal because they are still small and it was getting late, probably they were tired. Then she said "yes they are sleepy.... the cab so long.... I just called up their grandfather..... he so worried for them..... so I must bring them back...... so late already.... I just came back from Texas....... living there for 14 years....." I asked her why then she came back to Singapore. She said "My sister wanted me to come back.... because I was sick..... tomorrow I need to go see the doctor....." Just then, her cab arrived. She said "Thanks, and see you around..." and she was gone.

I don't know why but from the start when I got into the queue and noticed her, I felt so sorry for her (I know I should not but I guess that was my normal human reaction too). I had immediately taken out the Namgyalma amulet I had received from Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and was pondering how I could give the amulet to her (for protection). Then I muttered a silent prayer, and started chanting the Medicine Buddha's mantra under my breath silently "tayatha om bekanze bekanze maha bekanze bekanze, radza samudgate soha" as well as Guan Yin's mantra "om mani padme hum" many many many times and blew them towards her direction, many many times (This was just the same way as we bless the fishes in the water by saying prayers and mantras and blowing into the water. It is said that the water becomes blessed. Whoever that water touches fish, tiny or big animals, or tiny insects, the negative karma of all those sentient beings is purified). Likewise if we blow it into the air, whoever gets touched by it, will get the blessings. I probably recited both mantras to her at least a 1000 times and dedicated to her, as she was fidgetting in front of me throughout that entire 45 minutes. This was the least I could do for her.

Waiting in the queue with the Pink Slippers Lady, witnessing this 'abnormal' stranger was a touching experience for me. I was touched by her motherly love for her kids and her innocent childlike behaviour. Usually we would have avoided people like her as we are afraid they are not sane and may become violent, but this time I was actually trying to stay very close to her as possible, in order to say the prayers and bless mantras on her (without her realising it, of course). I did not pluck up enough courage to give her the amulet in the end. I did not want to appear pushy and to scare her off. Well, at least I hope she benefited from those mantras. (This is especially beneficial because now is the Tibetan New Year (Losar) and also merit-multiplying month and any merits you do increases by 100,000 times!). Likewise, the mantras she received were equivalent to billions. May she recover and be well soon.

In a way, I was glad the taxi queue was so long that night.

Chilling out with Chocolate Souffle

After 6 hours of long life puja, I'm a little exhausted. Here, I'm chilling out with chocolate soufflé and tiramisu lover (with Baileys). Not even hungry for dinner. Just tired.

Those who matter

A collage of some of my family members! A nice warm reunion, I must say.

Hey hey, look what I found! Photos of my grandparents in their younger days. I don't know my grandpa much as I was only 2 years old when he died. But he sure was a good and responsible albiet strict father to his 11 children. You know, I think my grandma looks prettier now than she was in her younger days.

The dishes we eat during CNY

Let me show you some of the CNY dishes we had these 2 days. There are always certain dishes we must have during the chinese new year, even though we can probably have it anytime throughout the year. Reunion dinner is usually just with my immediate family. It is only on the last day of CNY (15th day) that the entire extended family will gather for another round of Chap Goh Mei dinner. See, we Chinese eat and eat.

Last year, we had our reunion at a restaurant where we ordered dishes. This year, we had steamboat at home instead as it has been quite a while since we last had steamboat. Most Chinese families normally have steamboat at their reunion gathering on the eve. I suppose steamboat is the easiest as you can just buy anything you like, cut them into slices or smaller pieces and just throw them into the steamboat and let the ingredients cook, and making the soup stock chockful of flavours at the end of it. Ingredients we had were abalone, tiger prawns, pork slices, pork liver, squid, fish slices, fishballs, crabsticks (for the kids!), fish rolls, veggies. You can even throw in some thin noodles or vermicelli or tang hoon into the soup, as well as crack an egg or two, and you get a really nice bowl of noodles soup with all the sweetness of the ingredients.

Besides steamboat, we also had a few cooked side dishes to go with the meal.  We ordered this fantastic roast duck from Joo Chiat. My family prefers roast duck to chicken because of the juicy roasted skin, I suppose. Someone was asking in Twitter why some people buy a duck in whole without cutting, while some prefer to have it cut when we collect it. Well, I guess for those "whole" ducks, they are meant to be offerings for prayers to the ancestors, so it is preferred to be whole and complete. For us, we were just having it for dinner, not prayers, hence we usually request the seller to do it for us. I mean, we're not butchers, right?

This dish is called "Sng". The veggie is called Sng and it is some kind of chive. Stir fried with 3-layer pork, sea cucumber, chinese mushroom, fried beancurd, onions and fatt choy (black moss hair look-alike), it is a nice must-have dish my mom usually cook on new year's eve. This dish is symbolic because Sng in teochew /hokkien means 'to count', and this will ensure we have money to count throughout the year. The black moss hair is called fatt choy and in cantonese, it sounds like fa cai, and it means 'to get rich'.

This is Ngoh Hiang and something which mom will make every year. We usually make many rolls of these for ourselves as well as to give them to our loved ones. It is basically meat rolls with many ingredients all chopped and cut and rolled up with beancurd skin. We fry the rolls as and when you want to eat them and garnish with cucumber or zucchini, plus our homemade spicy sour chilli sauce, it is heaven.

The ingredients for Ngoh Hiang, my mom used pork, some special kind of sticky fish, prawns, carrots, water chestnuts, spring onions, 5-spices powder, corn flour etc.. Then the mixed ingredients were wrapped with a slightly salted beancurd skin, and put to steam for 10 minutes. After they are cooked we can keep and store the rolls in the freezer till you want to eat them. Then you can fry the roll and cut them into smaller pieces like this. Yummy!

On the first day of CNY we usually stay at home as many relatives will visit us, since mom is the eldest. Then on the second day of CNY we usually go visiting a few places and of course my Grandma's place. We have lunch there, and an aunt will always buy the New Year Fish. This fish is usually full of roe and not fishy during the chinese new year period, hence it is a favourite among teochews to buy them and just steam them. It is very nice if dipped into chilli and lime sauce. These fishes did not come cheap, my aunt said it was more than $100 per kg. She got it slightly cheaper at $70 per kg! Still, I think it is damn expensive! But then again it is only eaten once a year, I suppose it's alright?

This is called "Lou Soon" in teochew. I'm not sure what it is called in english. It is basically Braised Soon, a type of crunchy veg which has an unique taste. An aunt bought it from Bangkok (because it is nicer there), and soaked in water for a few days, before it is slowly boiled till it is soft. The crunchy taste remains and my grandma cooks it with chinese mushrooms. This is one of my favourite vegetarian Teochew dish which goes well with porridge or rice and I only get to eat this during CNY.

A colourful dish of stir fried veggies - capsicum, snow peas, broccoli, prawns, cauliflower. It's a must for our family to include lots of veggies in our meals, it's just our habit. I cannot imagine some families just have all meat and only meat dishes without veggies.

Yet another aunt (so nice to have so many aunts!) made this, Minced Pork Balls wrapped with Cabbage. It was very very nice, as it tasted like the Nonya Chap Chye but with meat. The minced pork balls were well marinated and flavourful.

Then another aunt will usually cook this as well, a dry version of Chap Chye, with cabbage, black fungus, fried beancurd skin (hoo kee), tang hoon (transparent rice vermicelli). It is also a dish I like.

There was another dish which this aunt cooked which is my personal favourite, Sesame Pork & Liver. The way she cooked it with wine and sesame oil and soya sauce, the combination of the tastes from the pork and liver was so nice. Maybe it is because I like liver, and it was cooked just right juicy and not too hard.

So, the above was just SOME highlights of the dishes we usually have during CNY. Strangely, this year I didn't have much appetite to eat too much compared to previous years. I only had a little bit of everything. Since last week, mostly I had only one main meal per day, and the rest of the meal were usually oats or milo or one slice of bread or a piece of kueh. I think I've lost appetite because too busy or preoccupied with something else. If this continues, I'm sure I'm going to lose some weight! Haha, great!!

So, what's your favourite CNY dish?

Waiting for reunion dinner!

Rise to the occasion

This year CNY, I actually didn't really buy a lot of stuff, because I'm busy anyway. Let me show you my house and some highlights of stuff. CNY-ish enough?

It's a-must to have mandarin oranges, as they signify "kum" which means gold in Cantonese. This is my wealth plant which has been with me for a few years and it is still growing strongly, tied the leaves with red ribbon and it becomes a CNY wealth plant!  A little corner of my living room with one of the Buddha plaque which I lugged back from Dubai, red table cloth spruced up the coffee table. One important thing, we must ensure our rice urn is filled to the brim every CNY, so that it will ensure we will always have enough to eat the whole year long. Stick the rice urn with the word "mun", which means "always full".

The couplet of the God of Wealth is a must too. I put it up at my wealth area in the house next to my water feature. Gifts are filling up our house fast, and this here is abalone. This is a bamboo plant is one of the popular plants people buy during CNY. I planted these on soil instead of water. Another Buddha plaque in my living room which I decorated red pebbles around it for a nice CNY touch.

This is the Laughing Buddha which we have for many years, looking happy, overseeing everyone who is watching the TV. Haha! This brass plaque is a new one which has the Kalachakra mantra, Chenrezig mantra and Shakyamuni mantra which is to be hanged outside my house above the main door. In this way whoever passes through the door will have their negative karma accumulated since eons ago, purified. This will be personally blessed by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. On my dining table, a tray of artificial fruits plus a real pineapple. Again pineapple is something auspicious during CNY. And flowers for offering on the actual day.

My desk has a small golden bowl filled with ingots, coins and abacus, this symbolises there will always be an inflow of money. Niece made these fishes from red packets. I'm too lazy to make anything since all decorations are easily available and cheap. Bought these special Tiger coins packages for niece and nephew as angpow, since niece is a Tiger-born.  We are not short of CNY goodies and snacks. I really tried to cut down the amount of food this year because we always could not finish all the food stuff.

This is my living room. I had to show this because it took me a long time to put up the  stupid sofa covers. Well, my original leather has some holes now, thanks to the old folks' ingenious way of using "anti-leather" spray on them! I had to hide the leather sofa with a DIY cloth cover which has so many folds!! This year I tone down any red in this Southeast part of the house. So it is just my Zen colours of dark brown and green. Oh, the maroon vase has money, ingots and gold bars inside too. How can a vase be empty, right?  :D

Just some other corners of the living room. I have plenty of plants both indoors and outdoors. I had a bright red table cloth on the side board. This is near South and almost to the center of the house. The character "chun" which means Spring is on the inside of my main door.

These look so auspicious, eh? The organic apples with the word "Gong Xi Fa Cai" printed on them, a pumpkin and the edible ingot which is basically a chewy cake (nian gao). All these are on the altar as offerings. And lastly my main door outside. Red banner and couplets to ensure a smooth year ahead! Notice I did not decorate any Tiger couplets or pictures in the house? Tiger is a ferocious animal, hence it's better to leave him outside, even though this is the tiger year. If you invite him in, you may get bitten! Hehehe! (*joking*)

Ok, have a nice reunion dinner, everyone!

Who's in da house?

Yesterday morning, woke up at about 6am from a restful sleep of about 5, 6 hours. Haven't been doing that for some time. The past few weeks, mostly I couldn't sleep till 3-4am. So now I am trying to make sure I'm worn out by 12 midnight every night so that I had get at least 6 hours of sleep.

At 6am yesterday, I woke up fully charged, tweeted and sent some messages and I dozed off again for a bit. Then I had a short dream or it was because I could not remember most part of the dream.

I was at home. I saw many people filling into my living room. Then just as quickly, I saw the center of my house evolved into a swimming pool which was not too deep, probably around the waist level. Then I saw the people who were at my house, mostly strangers, all jumped into the pool to play with the water, still fully clothed. Funny thing was, they were all wearing a white top. Then I started seeing foam evolving from the water. They were having a foam pool party! Then someone handed me something, a piece of crumpled paper. As I unfolded the paper, it was actually a 4D lottery ticket! However, there was no number printed on it!

I was just an observer as I watched the people having fun right inside my house filled with laughter and squeals of delight. Then I walked passed my bedroom. I opened the door. There was nothing in my room, no bed, no cupboard, no table etc.... Basically it was an empty room. Then I saw a friend at one corner of my room. I recognized the friend because of the khaki army blouse she was wearing. She was just sitting quietly at the corner, not doing anything, not talking, relaxed but with a somewhat far away look on her face. I did not talk to her. I was just wondering what she was doing there. Then, end of dream.

Again I'm not too sure of the significance of this dream. Am I going to strike lottery (hehe) with the appearance of the lottery ticket? Morever there was the swimming pool inside my house. Water means wealth, no? I remember every CNY I would dream of something related to lottery. No, I have not strike it rich yet. Bah!

Then the appearance of this friend for the very first time in my dreams. There is something in my subsconscious mind telling me something but I cannot be sure at this moment. Probably it was the string of events that happened that led to this dream, the fluctuating extreme states of emotions related to this friend. I'll just have to monitor and see what happens next. I hope she is alright. And it had to be this friend whom I told, I didn't want and better not to have her in my dreams! Haha! An irony which I do not wish to partake in.
I got to know a doctor a few days ago, a meek and calm lady. She was very gentle and soft spoken. As we chatted, she told me she was actually a general practitioner with her own clinic practice in Ubi. However on the side, she was also into psycho spiritual healing, reiki, dream yoga, counselling and a whole lot of other stuff which I can't even recall the terms now. She said although she practises western medicine, but medicine is but an only temporary relief. Rather, she believes tuning into the energies of our body and the energies around us as well as the energies of the objects we are in touch with everyday, which is a more natural way of healing. I am not familiar with the healing methods but I was really interested that I paid full attention to whatever she said.

Then we talked about dream yoga and I told her about some of my dreams, both spiritual and non spiritual. She was surprised at some of my dreams. She said some dreams can foretell impending events, some dreams are the result of the disturbed mind, some dreams connect you to past lives, some dreams are conveyed to you from higher beings etc.... She believed there are messages the dreams were trying to convey, but that I needed to find the way to interpret them, through the subconscious mind. This is because each individual's dreams are different and we need to find the formula unique to us. She urged me to record every bits of the dreams I had (I replied yes, they  are all in my blog!). She told me I looked young for my age and she said actually when she first saw me, she had thought about recommending me to a dream yogi (someone who can help to decipher dreams by teaching the methods), even before we started talking! Wow, I was a little blown away by her observation. Shall see what's in store next.

The goal of dream yoga is to achieve enlightenment.  - Tenzen Wangyal

The waking state is not permanent. It comes and goes every twenty four hours. And yet, according to the great sages, there is something in us that is “always conscious,” that is literally conscious or aware at all times through all states, waking, dreaming, sleeping. And that “ever present awareness is Spirit in us”. That underlying current of constant consciousness (or non-dual awareness) is a direct and unbroken ray of pure Spirit itself. It is our connection with the higher being.  - Ken Wilbur

It has come

A couple of days ago, I was so happy to receive this bracelet of mala beads which are made of black semi-precious stones. This has been personally blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and hence a very significant gift to me.

Then last night I just got the confirmation from ABC about the initiation of the sacred Yamantaka to be given by Lama Zopa Rinpoche from 15-17 Feb. Not anyone can receive this empowerment as this is a higher tantra initiation. So I was really happy mine was approved. It will be a 3-day nightly marathon as Rinpoche's teachings and initiations have historically run into the wee hours of the morning and even till  the next morning. Rinpoche teaches what is karmically beneficial to his audience and not according to time slots given.

Another teaching next week would be a 4-day commentary of Lama Tsongkhapa which is open to the public (19,21,22,23 Feb).  This is also something  rare and sacred which I am really looking forward to, because Rinpoche would be giving oral transmission. This practice of Lama Tsongkhapa is designed to draw us closer to our teachers and to open ourselves up to the blessings of their influence in our lives. The migtsema prayer (Tsongkhapa's mantra) has special power to remove obstacles to our practice and to generate wisdom, compassion and power. Here is Rinpoche's program in its entirety.

And to kick off CNY, I would be at DPL on CNY eve for the yearly 3-in-1 puja that will last till after midnight to herald in the new year. And on the first day of CNY, Lama Zopa Rinpoche would be in ABC to give personal blessings to each of us.  Hence I would be pretty busy to even do CNY visiting, and may also be missing in action from blogging (I may blog and tweet 'live' during the teachings though... haha!). Or I may schedule some posts in advance. So, don't miss me. *chuckle*

If you're happy and you know it

Happy song for a happy day! Hope it psyches you up for a great day!
Awesome acoustics.

If you're happy and you know it,
Clap your hands
If you're happy and you know it,
Then your face will surely show it
If you're happy and you know it,
Clap your hands.

Lighting a candle for a friend

Busy and tiring week for me. A number of personal things to look into before CNY arrives this weekend.

Went for a tsog offering puja in DPL on Monday night. Tsog offering is very important for renewing commitments and averting obstacles. It is a special method through which we come under the care and guidance of the Buddhas and protectors. Our wealth, merit, and great bliss will increase through this practise.

That night just before the puja I had an excruciating tummy ache and I thought I would not be able to go through the entire session. Miraculously when puja started and throughout I did not feel pain at all. It was only when I reached home the pain came back for a while.

As usual, I offered flowers and candle and wrote down the names of the people I was praying for. This time round, I specially lighted a candle for a friend of mine who seemed to be having entanglements with many trouble-makers (petty people). I am very glad to announce that the prayer was especially potent because immediately after the puja that night, she had managed to rid herself of a "perceived trouble-maker", someone whom she claimed she is not comfortable with. I wish her well in her future dealings with people. Sometimes after a puja, that person falls sick. This only means purification. She has not cleared all her growing pool of trouble-makers, but at least one has been banished through this puja. May she have a clear mind to distinguish who are her genuine friends and who are the genuine trouble-makers. May her path be illuminated with brilliance and be without delusions. May the truth and kindness prevail.

It may sound funny, but whenever I make friends with someone, I instinctively somehow know if they are facing some sort of problem at that moment. I am drawn to people who need help. Usually the person does tell me the problems shortly after, and I would try to advise the person on how to address the problem. Usually I do eventually understand somewhat the character of the person (may not be 100% but at least 50% of the time I was right). Call me intense or whatever, I know I treat people how I like to be treated. Normally I hang around because I know the person still need help. And usually after I had helped the person and see some result, I would be extremely happy for that person, even if the person does not appreciate the effort.

My only hope is that my pure intentions are not questioned. I do not wish to have helped someone and then to have the person turned around against me and accused me of this and that afterwards. I do not ask for anything in return, except a genuine friend. Sometimes friends who appear can be a blessing to you and can be beneficial to you. Sometimes friends who left can be a blessing too.

Sometimes if a friend is meant to come and go, it is my karma. We have a connectedness somewhere from the past. But I know I am protected by the Buddhas. Those who could potentially harm me, is only here for a while. Then we move on.

Do you know who is your benefactor and who is your enemy? Can you distinguish which is which?

Bully

My mom is a retiree. She left the civil service umpteen years ago.  She used to work for some prominent people in those days. After her retirement, however, she did not want to stay idle at home. So she has been working in a school library for the past 9 years. The pay is miserable, but it is ok, or so we thought, as it is something to keep her occupied.

However, the past few months, after the school has shifted back to their renovated building, mom's workload has increased due to new arrangements. Her pay has not increased but she has to work longer hours (checking in earlier than starting time) and leaving later than usual (without  overtime pay). On a few occasions, mom did not even get to eat lunch because the library was occupied by teachers and students throughout the day for lessons (don't they have new classrooms to have proper lessons in? Why use the library?!) and there was no one to take over mom for even half an hour (yes their lunch hour is only 30 minutes).  Mom went hungry and my mom is someone who cannot go hungry, because of her health and also, being hungry makes her agitated and angry.  After a few occasions, my mom brought up this issue with her manager. Instead, in return, she was scolded for being incompetent in her role, her manager said "I don't like your attitude".  The manager even challenged my mom to complain to the principal or the vice principal. This made my mom very upset. She reports to this manager, and 'gives her face' by bringing issues encountered to her, yet she was scolded and brushed off to talk to even higher authority.

Then just the other day, when some workers were doing some shifting at the library, the teacher/s in charge were not present due to some reason, there was no one to supervise the workers and my mom was not briefed on what to relay to the workers. This tyrant of the manager came into the library after a while, and started ranting at my mom for no reason, shouting at her in front of the workers, who were all shaking their heads at the tyrant's scolding.

My mom felt so insulted for being reprimanded for no reason, and in front of strangers too. It seemed the manager had something to grind with mom after the previous episode. Apparently this manager treats all administrative staff and operations staff in a very condescending and rude manner. She leads by simply shouting at her staff to get things done, by being very fierce. Hence this person is not very popular among the staff.

Of course I am infuriated. Who is this person to bully my mom in such a manner? Even if my mom has really done something wrong, was this how an educated person in a managerial post IN an educational institution behaves?  How do schools supervise and monitor their staff performance (be it a manager, a teacher, a librarian or a cleaner), besides just pushing students for excellent grades?  Are staff in the lower ranks being taken advantage of?  My mom said this manager is even younger than her own children! And in those civil service days, this very manager was just a young girl working in my mom's department and my mom was her senior. I am waiting to see how this manager is going to address the issues my mom brought up. See if she is still going to continue bullying the old and weak. If this continues, I am going to get my mom out of the place. Since the manager has refused to accept responsibilities, and is obviously not capable  or equipped with the necessary skill set to manage, I am going to "higher authority". I am not going to sit back and see other people get bullied the same way in future. They think my mom is just an old ignorant woman. They forget my mom has children who are not going to sit back and see her being bullied.  They do not know I can be very vocal if I want to. They do not know there are different mediums in which people can feedback. Shame, it's a school some more.

Butterfly or angel??

Niece in her latest Chinese dance costume. Not sure what's her next gig gonna be.

Like attracts like

Read this from Moonpointer's blog, so true, isn't it, tit for tat?

Tit: Our boss is becoming more of a stickler for punctuality...

Tat: What's wrong with that?

Tit: ... while he disregards the extended hours of time we voluntarily worked!

Tat:  What you mean is that he should give and take?

Tit: Exactly! Because we do give much more everyday, even if we are a little late on some days!

Tat: You will notice something soon...

Tit: What's that?

Tat: The more  bosses want staff to be punctual in arriving, they more they will be punctual in leaving!

Tit: Why is that so?

Tat: The calculative attracts the calculative.

Tit: Yeah... when bosses lose appreciation for staff's extra efforts, these efforts will lessen!

So are you ngiao and giam siap (hokkien for calculative and stingy)???

In the same breath, here is another interesting short article from www.dailyom.com which I whole-heartedly agree with two hands and two legs up, titled Like Attracts Like.  Would like a friend of mine to read this (you know who you are).

When we look at other people, we see many of their qualities in innumerable and seemingly random combinations. However, the qualities that we see in the people around us are directly related to the traits that exist in us. "Like attracts like" is one of the spiritual laws of the universe. We attract individuals into our lives that mirror who we are. Those you feel drawn to reflect your inner self back at you, and you act as a mirror for them. Simply put, when you look at others, you will likely see what exists in you. When you see beauty, divinity, sweetness, or light in the soul of another, you are seeing the goodness that resides in your soul. When you see traits in others that evoke feelings of anger, annoyance, or hatred, you may be seeing reflected back at you those parts of yourself that you have disowned or do not like.
Because we are all mirrors for each other, looking at the people in your life can tell you a lot about yourself. Who you are can be laid bare to you through what you see in others. It is easy to see the traits you do not like in others. It is much more difficult to realize that you possess those same traits. Often, the habits, attitudes, and behaviors of others are closely linked to our unconscious and unresolved issues.

When you come into contact with someone you admire, search your soul for similarly admirable traits. Likewise, when you meet someone exhibiting traits that you dislike, accept that you are looking at your reflection. Looking at yourself through your perception of others can be a humbling and eye-opening experience. You can also cultivate in you the traits and behaviors that you do like. Be loving and respectful to all people, and you will attract individuals that will love and respect you back. Nurture compassion and empathy and let the goodness you see in others be your mirror.

Karma & Chameleon

How many of you remember the song Karma Chameleon by Culture Club many eons ago? The chorus is addictive and strikes a chord ... which goes like this....

Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon,
you come and go, you come and go.
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams,
red gold and green, red gold and green...

I just read an e-Newsletter from Kechara House, entitled Karma & Chameleon. I thought it is a nice article and relevant for a friend who is having a little problem right now to read it.

A chameleon protects itself by changing its body's colours through a bio-chemical process to 'hide' itself in different environments. However it does not work all the time and they do fall prey to predators. There are no principles in this world which are absolutely dependable. Even gravity fluctuates and all scientific laws operate only within certain parameters.

Buddha said to rely on karma for total protection. Well, Mr. Karma can't protect you directly but if we understand its principles, we can work with it to attain everlasting happiness and freedom from all suffering.

A chameleon may be fascinating for some, but if being one is not your cup of tea, then we have to know what or who Mr. Karma is to make sure we don't become a reptile in our future rebirth. We can never be sure what stupid things we might have done in our previous lives.

The term 'karma' is popularly used as a noun, as in "bad karma" or "good karma". You slipped on a banana skin, and it's bad karma. Someone returned a lost item to you and that's good karma. It's a cool way to describe an event but there's more to it than that.

The law of karma is a special instance of the natural causal laws operating in this universe whereby all our actions of body, speech and mind are the causes and our experiences are their effects.

All of us can understand cause and effect in its generality. For example, when there is thunder and lightning, we can expect rain; when sand and stone are mixed with cement, you get concrete. Things are produced when certain causes and conditions come together.

The karmic cause and effect we are referring to here applies to living beings and animate objects. A table or a boat don't have good or bad karma.

More definitively, karma means action. It operates through volitional or willed activities. To understand karma better we need to know its three main components - actions, their effects and the imprints of actions.

When one engages in any action, upon its completion, it deposits an imprint or potentiality in one's mindstream. When the right conditions are met, it will ripen and their results are experienced. These potentialities can lie dormant long after an action has been committed.

Whenever an action is performed, we get an immediate and a subsequent effect. For example, when we get angry and shout at  someone, our face gets hot and we immediately feel the pain or discomfort of anger. When this is over, an imprint has been deposited in our mindstream which can ripen as further negative repercussions  in the future.

As Buddhists, this is a very important point to understand. When an action has ripened, there is not much we can do about it. Even Buddhas can't help us. For example, we are reborn as humans now and we have to live out our life in this form. It will be futile in this life, to pray to become an angel next morning or in 20 years time.

However, as long as the potentialities stay dormant, we have the opportunity to purify or to remove them so that they don't create problems for us later. We have real hope to have a better future than our present one.

Here's the song Karma Chameleon, sang by the iconic Boy George. Have a nice weekend!

They should've added 'No Vandalism' too

What'ya think she's up to?

Passed by this lady and she was there hugging the tree with her face hidden for the longest time, without moving. What do you think she's up to?

Spring is here.... la la la....

Spring is here! The Metal Tiger is here (although most prefer to call it the Golden Tiger). Phew I have finally managed to do everything I needed to do to the house, especially applying the feng shui cures. It is forecasted that this year will be a tough one with conflicting energies, because the bazi of the year has 2 Tigers and 2 zodiac enemies, Rabbit and Rooster. And Water is totally missing this year. That's why they say it will be a tough and challenging year. However, Spring is a season I like best in terms of element, as it is of the Wood element, and I need Wood! But in terms of weather, my favourite season is actually Autumn.

Nonetheless, I believe it will be a better year for me than the previous year of the sleeping Ox. This is because Tiger is my friend, AND I have lots of water, so hopefully the balancing effect of the year and personal bazi will help me ride through the year smoothly. Think positive! And let's hope the economy will continue to grow, be at peace with others and ourselves, and also lesser natural calamities.

Contrary to beliefs, I do not think that all Tiger-born people are fierce and cunning, especially the women. I have an aunt who is born in the year of the Tiger, and although she has a nasty mouth which spouts nonsense, she has a kind heart and she gets along fine with me, she dotes on me. I also have an uncle who is a Tiger, and he is such a nice, gentle, hardworking man. And, my niece is also a Tiger, my ally forever! Gonna hug her real tight! Haha! This was the little Tiger when she was small!

May the new Spring bring you happiness and success all year round!
