Sofa.... so far so good....

My leather sofa at home for the past 2 years is already ruined. It is not really the quality of the leather or the retailer who sold us our Zen-looking huge 3-seater and 2 seater.

Maybe it was due to too much exposure of the morning sun (even though the curtains were drawn). I think the most likely culprit would be due to maintenance. My parents have been wiping and spraying my dear leather with all sorts of detergent, EVEN THOUGH I have bought leather-cleaning liquid and leather-polishing spray and warned them not to use other liquids. They refused to listen to me and refused to admit the holes and tears of the leather were the result of those dreadful sprays. They claimed that it was not real leather.....  -__-"

At first, we used sofa throws to cover the peeling leather sofa.  It didn't worked because it would breed cockroach eggs underneath.  Mom, being the perfectionist she is, decided to buy a new sofa. So we went shopping.  Got distracted by the other furniture except sofas..... beds, mattresses, the interior designs etc....

Besides Ikea, I think only Picket & Rail still has display of country designs, which are not so common nowadays, compared to those contemporary modern designs.  Although I do not really fancy a country theme (too heavy and stifling to me), but the white wooden furniture still look cosy and intimate. Some people prefer a mock fireplace like this to match a country theme decor. For me, I prefer more simple clear cut Zen-looking dark wood for my furniture. Two years ago, I actually bought my dark wood bedroom set from Picket & Rail. Too bad Barang Barang has already gone bust, bankrupt and closed shop, otherwise I like their Zen designs too.

More bedroom design ideas.... and there were so many other stuff to distract us....  cutlery, cushions, dining tables.....

There were even soft toys and piggy banks, planter stands, nooks and wares.....

Back to proper business... I like the lengthy Bayside sofa which looked similar to my current one, with simple outlines. I also liked the leather lounge chair. I had been eyeing lounge chairs to laze around, for watching TV or a good read, but no more space in the living room to accommodate. Mom liked the Americana Solid Wood sofa because it was high quality leather and heavy teak wood, but the price was also pretty  atas (Malay for high class).  We definitely did not want a fabric sofa, didn't want to change covers and wash which would be too troublesome.

In the end we decided on the Delaware L-Shaped Leather Sofa set, slightly shorter than my existing sofa but seemed comfy enough. We could customise and choose the colour of the leather. I chose my usual dark brown leather, of course. I'm not the type to buy a red sofa, you know.  They are delivering the new sofa soon. I hope no more holes and tears and it should last us for at least the next 5 years.

Chasing that hidden sun

I was walking along the streets in Little India, when I suddenly looked up at the sky and saw these. The afternoon sun was totally hiding behind the clouds that the outline was beautiful. I have a thing for the skies and clouds. I love it when I chance upon the beautiful work of nature at the oddest times. And I was only using the iPhone's camera. I didn't even bother to photoshop these.

The last 2 photos were the famous Hindu temple, Sri Veerama Kaliamman Temple. Love the natural lighting and shadows, sometime perfectly aligned and sometimes totally abstract.

Reasons for earthquakes

Been wanting to write about this but was too busy with the updates on Lati Rinpoche's passing. Did a quick check online on the number of disastrous earthquakes which had happened recently just this year alone. Here is the list of SIGNIFICANT earthquakes, excluding the minor ones:
Tens, hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost due to these earthquake tragedies as well as other natural disasters. And when I read news reports on the latest earthquake in Kyegudo (Yushu), Qinghai, I'm fuming. I quote this article, some excerpts....

BEIJING – Earthquake survivors say it was the Tibetan monks who helped first, bringing food, pitching tents and digging through rubble after disaster hit far western China a week ago, killing thousands.

Now the Buddhist monks who responded first are being pushed out of the disaster area and off of state media — apparently sidelined by Beijing's unease with their heroism and influence.

Monasteries were given verbal orders the last two days to recall their monks. Amid hours of coverage for China's national day of mourning on Wednesday, no monks were visible in the official proceedings.

It was a jarring omission in light of their contributions to the week-long rescue and relief effort following the quake, which killed 2,064 people and injured more than 12,000 others.

His Holiness Dalai Lama has requested to visit Qinghai, where he was born, to comfort the earthquake victims. His request, not surprisingly, was ignored by the Chinese Government, who prefers to deem any actions of the Dalai Lama as politically-motivated. Where some 10,000 survivors, mostly Tibetans, were left homeless from the Yushu earthquake, they told reporters they were being neglected by the government, and insinuated that it was because of ethnicity. “They staged a show with the aid trucks, pretending to deliver food, but actually driving past us,” said one monk. “Look around you, the Tibetan families here have no food, water or medicine.” In addition, we were told by Chinese reporters, who could not cover the story themselves, that a Tibetan who was caught stealing was bound and dragged through the streets.

As the Buddha explained thousands of years ago in his teaching in the Maha-parinibbana Sutra 3:14 (when asked by his disciple Ananda), earthquakes are due to eight causes. Their principal cause is explained in terms of agitating the atmosphere. How can the atmosphere be intentionally agitated?

First reason:
"This great earth, Ananda, is established upon liquid, the liquid upon the atmosphere, and the atmosphere upon space. And when, Ananda, mighty atmospheric disturbances take place, the liquid is agitated. And with the agitation of the liquid, tremors of the earth arise. This is the first reason, the first cause for the arising of mighty earthquakes."

Second reason:
"Again, when an ascetic or holy man of great power, one who has gained mastery of his mind, or a deity who is mighty and potent, develops intense concentration on the delimited aspect of the earth element, and to a boundless degree on the liquid element, he, too, causes the earth to tremble, quiver, and shake. This is the second reason, the second cause for the arising of mighty earthquakes."

3rd reason:
When a Bodhisattva (Buddha-to-be) departs from the Tusita realm and descends into his mother's womb, mindfully and clearly comprehending;
4th reason:
When the Bodhisattva comes out from his mother's womb, mindfully and clearly comprehending;
5th reason:
When the Tathagata (Buddha) becomes fully enlightened in unsurpassed, supreme Enlightenment;
6th reason:
When the Tathagata sets rolling the excellent Wheel of the Dharma;
7th reason:
When the Tathagata renounces his will to live on;
8th reason:
When the Tathagata comes to pass away into the state of Nirvana in which no element of clinging remains.

Hence the main cause of earthquake is when we humans agitate the natural environment  in the seas, injuring the sea creatures as well as other co-habitants. Destruction of nature and its natural resources results from ignorance, greed and lack of respect for the earth's living things. And due to this, our future generations will be greatly affected if we do not stop causing harm to the earth. Earthquakes are the reaction, a cry from the earth.

His Holiness Dalai Lama's advise in Facebook:

"We need to consider how our actions, in affecting the environment, are likely to affect others. This is often difficult to judge; but it is clear that we are the only species with the power to destroy the earth. Birds and insects have no such power, nor does any other mammals. Yet if we have the capacity to destroy the earth, we also have the capacity to protect it. I believe we have an urgent responsibility to do so.

In conclusion, I appeal to governments, international aid organisations and other agencies to extend whatever assistance they can to enable the families of those devastated by this tragedy to rebuild their lives. At the same time, I also call on the survivors of this catastrophe to recognise what has happened as the workings of karma and to transform this adversity into something positive, keeping their hopes up and meeting setbacks with courage as they struggle to restore what they have lost. Once again, I pray for those who have lost their lives as well as for the well being of those who have survived.

Right now, April 27th, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is leading prayers for the Kyegudo earthquake victims in Dharamsala starting  at 1:00pm IST (GMT+5.30).  It will be a live webcast and can be viewed at http://dalailama.com/live

沒那麼簡單

Bittersweet song by 黃小琥, recommended by a friend and I like it. Would like to dedicate this song to a friend (you know who you are). :)

Lati Rinpoche's Relics & Auspicious Signs

Heart relics of Lati Rinpoche

Precious relics of the Heart, Tongue, Eyeballs, Bones

Above photos are a first glimpse of Lati Rinpoche's holy relics that were found inside the hearth, provided by Gaden Shartse Monastery. When the pyre was opened, many amazing relics have been found. Among the relics, was Rinpoche's heart relic which was intact and unburnt, and so were the tongue, eyeballs and some bones. The most special eye, tongue & heart relics are representative of His vajra body, speech and mind.  Also thousands of round  pill-like relics appeared. According to an old Geshe-la, Gelong Choephel, who is an expert in deciphering and recognising holy relics, inside the heart relic, there was a small Vajrayogini deity, which also happened to be Rinpoche's main deity.

The above are more photos provided by Gaden Shartse Monastery. There were many many white pill-like relics in the pyre when it was opened up a few days after Rinpoche's cremation.

A grand elaborate procession to invite back the holy relics of HH Kyabje Lati Rinpoche back to Lati Ladrang, led by H.H. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche and other Rinpoches.  Behind was Lati Rinpoche's personal attendant Sopon-la, carrying Rinpoche's ceremonial robe and crown.

Solemn moments as Rinpoche's holy relics were carried back to Lati Ladrang for more pujas.
Long-time attendant to Rinpoche - Gyen Soponla pays his respects to Rinpoche and his holy relics on his throne seat.

His Eminence Kensur Rinpoche Jampa Yeshe offers a white karta.

78-year old Geshe Ngawang Longtho also pays his respects.

As mentioned earlier, another auspicious sign that Rinpoche left behind after the cremation, was a little baby footprint found inside the hearth, pointing towards the East direction. It was also the same East direction where the first smoke shot out from the pyre when fire was lit on Rinpoche's holy body. This indicates that Rinpoche's rebirth will take place in the East. The small size of the footprint also meant that Rinpoche will take rebirth very soon.
Gaden Shartse Monastery has informed Dro-Phen Ling center in Singapore about other earlier auspicious signs too.

It was learnt that on 12 April (the day when Lati Rinpoche passed away at 5.25am), after his prayers, he had requested his personal attendant to help him bathe. This was unusual as Rinpoche normally bathe only after his breakfast. After his bath, Rinpoche told Sopon-la that "it is time for me to go" and instructed him to leave his room. With that, Rinpoche went into the Clear Light Meditative State (Thugdam). His attendants noted that at this time, an Unisha had appeared on top of Rinpoche's head. An Unisha is a flesh protuberance on the crown of the head. This was clearly one of the 32 distinctive and auspicious signs of a Buddha.

The doctor was called and he certified that Rinpoche had already passed away. However, Rinpoche's body remained warm throughout the next 2 days until 14 April, after he came out of his meditative state. Even after he was out of clear light meditation, throughout the 8 days until his cremation on 19 April, his body remained intact in its natural state with no sign of decomposition nor smell. Rinpoche's holy body was placed in coffin without sealing the top., which was just covered by cloth. His holy body remained in his room in Lati Ladrang until his cremation.
It was also noted that Rinpoche passed away sitting in the lotus position (the lotus represents the Buddha Mind). This is a position of meditation that symbolizes perfect balance of thought and tranquility. Lati Rinpoche's hands were in the Vitarka Mudra.

This is the mudra of teaching gesture. The right hand points upward, the left downward; both palms are tuned outward. The thumb and index finger of each hand form a circle. The right hand is at shoulder level, the left at the level of the hips. In a variant of this teaching gesture, the left hand rests palm upward in the lap, and the right hand is raised to shoulder level with its thumb and index finger forming a circle.

The Vitarka mudra (otherwise known as the mudra of discussion) is the gesture of discussion and transmission of Buddhist teaching. This mudra represents the mystic gesture of Taras and Bodhisattvas.

In true fashion of an Enlightened Being, Lati Rinpoche was a great teacher / master / guru and a modern-day Bodhisattva, and he is certainly taking rebirth, and coming back to us in order to teach us again and again, until we are all enlightened.

Lati Rinpoche has shown us, through diligent practice, we can also achieve Enlightenment within this lifetime. Lati Rinpoche is an Enlightened Being, a Buddha. And all these great auspicious signs and holy relics are living proof from a Buddha. May all be auspicious as we await his quick return. Om mani padme hum!

I quote what Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo wrote:

When a Buddhist speaks of “a True Path,” this is not meant as: “My religion is better than yours.”  It is not intended to be haughty or prideful.  Rather, we want to be on a path that has repeatedly produced results, and can be expected to do so in the future.

That is how I view the Buddha’s teachings.  They did not come from any ordinary intellectual process or experience, or from a compilation of other people’s views.  They arose from the mind of Enlightenment.

Some people call themselves “enlightened,” and when I hear this, I cease to believe them.  The Buddha simply said, “I am awake.”  He never made himself out to be a god; he never said he was different from anyone else.  He simply said, “I’ve given you the Path.  Now work out your own salvation.”

Kyabje Lati Rinpoche - Discovering of Relics

Day 12 of Rinpoche's passing. Newsflash from Gaden Shartse Monastery:

Friday 23 April 2010, Lati Rinpoche's fire puja pyre (above) has just been uncovered this morning.

When the pyre was opened, many amazing relics have been found. Lati Rinpoche's heart relic is left behind unburnt and there is a small Vajrayogini deity seen in his heart (Rinpoche's main deity).

It was also revealed a little footprint has been discovered pointing towards the East direction, the same direction of the first smokes during the cremation.  This is indicative of the direction of the place of Rinpoche's rebirth. The size of the footprint also has a significant meaning. Since it is small, this indicates that Rinpoche's reincarnation will arrive very soon. This means that Rinpoche will return to us very soon.

Photos of Rinpoche's relics will be posted once we receive more news from the monastery in Mundgod, India. Stay tuned.

Rejoice! This is truly evidence of a genuine Great Lama and an Enlightened one.  May we continue to keep the faith in PRACTICING the Dharma. For followers of Rinpoche, please pray for Rinpoche's swiftest return. __/\__

Below were photos taken during the Grand Guru Puja and Tsog Offering on the evening of Lati Rinpoche's cremation on 19 April and it went on for the following 3 days and 3 nights.

H.E. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche presided over the grand puja together with more than 1200 monks present.

Current Abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery, Khen Rinpoche Khenpo Jangchup Choeden, Kensur Rinpoche Dakpa Tenzin, as well as young high lama reincarnate Shartrul Rinpoche and other Geshe-las were also present.

Even the younger monks joined in the grand puja.

Rinpoche's stupa was elaborately decorated for the puja, in the aftermath of the cremation, with lights and flowers and food offerings. A splendid sight.

Tsog offerings to Rinpoche.

Lati Rinpoche's personal attendant, Sopon-la, made prayers and offering of khata to Rinpoche.

More than 1000 Sangha were present, chanting prayers for 3 days and 3 nights, after Rinpoche's cremation.

After the puja was completed, DPL members made offerings to each and everyone of the monks.

Reincarnate high lama, H.E. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche circumambulated Lati Rinpoche's stupa after the puja. Behind was Sopon-la, Lati Rinpoche's personal attendant.
Lati Rinpoche's stupa pyre before it was opened up.

Why do relics manifest from the ashes of the Buddha and spiritual masters? When the Buddha was alive, the people of that time had the opportunity to actually see and hear him, to be blessed by him in his human form. When the Buddha passed into nirvana (the enlightened state),he compassionately left relics so that today we still have the opportunity to receive the blessings of the Buddha, directly, in order to help sentient beings generate faith in our mindstreams as a cause to receive blessings, purify our negativities, and accumulate merit. Spiritual masters throughout history have blessed the world with their relics in this way and this phenomenon is still happening today.

Viewing holy relics inspires us to develop our own hearts and minds, to develop loving-kindness and compassion and to understand spiritual teachings. This is the reason why relics are considered very holy and precious. Relics are manifested and left behind due to the kindness of holy beings in order for us sentient beings to collect merit and purify obscurations.

Kyabje Lati Rinpoche's Fire Puja Ceremony

Day 8 of Rinpoche's passing. Below are photos taken during the cremation ceremony of Lati Rinpoche, courtesy and copyright of Gaden Shartse Dro-Phen Ling, Singapore, on 19 April, 2010.

At 6:30am in Lati Ladrang, all the monks and members of Gaden Shartse Dro-Phen Ling paid their final respects before the ceremony, and fire puja was to begin at 7:00am (India time). Photos of our precious Rinpoche's holy body should not be taken before Rinpoche left his room. Above photo was Rinpoche's body being carried out of his room.

Reincarnate H.E. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche, a very close student of HE Lati Rinpoche, led in the procession....

..... as well as another very close student of Lati Rinpoche, the current Abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery, dear Khen Rinpoche Jangchup Choeden.

About 10 monks carried Rinpoche's holy body slowly and carefully during the procession. Many monks, students, lay people lined the compounds of the monastery to send Rinpoche in his final journey. As Rinpoche's holy body passed by, everyone bowed respectfully. It was a 15-20 minutes walk to the debate hall where Rinpoche's fire puja was to be held.

Throughout the procession, thousands of monks were present alongside the entire pathway, all waiting for Rinpoche's holy body to pass. It was very crowded. It was evident that Lati Rinpoche commanded a high respect and devotion from the Sangha, a truly great enlightened lama.

The procession led by HE Zong Rinpoche, as well as the monks and members of Dro-Phen Ling finally arrived at the entrance of Gaden Shartse Monastery's debate hall. Even more thousands of monks awaited.

HE Kyabje Zong Rinpoche continued to lead HE Lati Rinpoche's holy body and group to circumambulate around the stupa 3 times.  Another reincarnate of a high lama, HE. Kyabje Ling Rinpoche, made a prayer dedication and offered a karta to the precious holy body of Rinpoche, before it was transferred into the stupa for cremation.

All of Monastery's highest lamas were present for the fire puja ceremony. They were H.E. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche, H.E. Kensur Rinpoche Dakpa Tenzin, H.E. Khen Rinpoche Jangchup Choeden (Abbot of Gaden Shartse Monastery), H.E. Kyabje Shartul Rinpoche Tenzin Kunkhen, H.E. Kensur Rinpoche Kunchok Tsering, H.E. Kensur Rinpoche Jampa Yeshe and H.E. Ling Rinpoche. Many of the most senior old Geshes were also present. Sitting beside Khen Rinpoche in the foreground, were Geshe Phuntsok Gyaltsen and Geshe Ngawang Longtho... who had visited the center in Singapore many times.

Before the start of the fire puja, the offering of the parasol, was symbolic of protection and royalty.

Gyen Sopon-la, personal attendant to Rinpoche for more than 50 years, made 3 prostrations to Rinpoche, and made his prayer requests and offered karta. H.E. Kyabje Song Rinpoche also made his prayers for Rinpoche's swift return. After that, the monks and members of Dro-Phen Ling all took turns to circumambulate the stupa 3 times, before making their prayers and offering of karta.  This was the last chance to pay final respects to Rinpoche before the actual start of the fire puja.

H.E. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche blessed all the substances to be used for the fire puja.

H.E. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche led in conducting the fire puja, together with Abbot Emeritus of Gaden Shartse Monastery, H.E. Kensur Rinpoche Dakpa Tenzin and Khen Rinpoche, as well as all the other Rinpoches and old Geshes.  The fire was lit and was to be inserted into the stupa to begin the cremation.  The fire was inserted starting from the front hole, facing all the Rinpoche's and Geshe-las.. followed by the other 3. The 4 holes represented the 4 directions.

The smoke was so great that the parasol was nearly hidden from view. The fire rose high that the parasol was offered into the fire as well.

In the meantime, all the monks continued their prayers during the puja, while the cremation was on-going. Smoke engulfed the entire place.

Together with the monks, the group DPL devotees, also focused in prayers for Rinpoche's swift return.

At the end of the grand fire puja, Chairperson of Dro-Phen Ling made offering  on behalf of all members of DPL to  all the monks and received blessing from H.E. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. Once again, all the Rinpoches, Geshes and monks circumambulated around the stupa 3 times and made prayer dedications the final time.

The stupa pyre after the cremation. It will be opened up this Friday 23 April to uncover Rinpoche's relics.

With the completion of the cremation, we came to a close the life of a Great Lama. We will always remember the compassionate and kind Lati Rinpoche, who had given his entire life to the Three Jewels, and a great teacher who came to benefit many sentient beings, with his teachings, initiations and blessings. Above was Rinpoche in Singapore for the  grand public puja, accompanied by his assistant Sopon-la and Mrs Goh Chok Tong. Red packets were given to the old, sick and needy.

From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank Lati Rinpoche, for being a part of and touching our lives dearly, in order to benefit us, not just in this life but for our future lives as well. May all who has met Rinpoche, seen him, talked to him, heard about him, received teachings from him and may all who is reading this be connected to Lati Rinpoche in the future. May all achieve realisations and may they be blessed by the Three Jewels always.

His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama has specially composed a quick return prayer for the swift return of HE Lati Rinpoche. May the sun of Lati Rinpoché’s reincarnation shine soon and may he be quickly discovered.

Here is a note from His Holiness:

"The students of Lati Labrang, the assembly of Gaden Shartse monastery, Trijang Labrang, Zong Labrang, Dro-Phen Ling Center Singapore, Phende Lekshe Ling Center Malaysia, Buddhist Center -Taiwan, Gaden Shartse Education Committee, Phukhang Khangtsen, as well as Thepo Khangtsen approached me with a request to compose a prayer for the quick return of the late Lati Rinpoche.

As I have had close association with this authentic spiritual teacher for over fifty years and have enjoyed a bond of pure faith and commitment, I have written this aspiration prayer. May the aims of this aspiration be fulfilled as prayed for.

This was composed by the Buddhist monk, the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, on the 5th day of the 3rd month in the seventeenth Rabjung cycle of the Tibetan calendar, namely, on 19, April, 2010."

PRAYER FOR THE QUICK RETURN
OF KYABJE LATI RINPOCHE
(Composed by His Holiness Dalai Lama)

O peerless savior and supreme Teacher, Shuddhodhana’s son,
O the seventeen masters and adepts, Nagarjuna and Asanga, and so on,
O Dipamkara as well as sovereign father Tsongkhapa,
Gloriously appear here today to grant auspiciousness.

On the great path leading to the heart of Enlightenment,
You’ve traversed by means of the perfect threefold discipline,
And have enhanced ever higher the realizations of enlightened qualities –
O glorious Guru, we offer our supplications at your feet.

Pray return gloriously to propagate the teaching of Lobsang,
By tying well the sash of monastic disciplinary precepts,
And, generating the altruistic intention to free all beings,
Engage in the tantric yogas of the two stages.

Think of the unbearable pain of the sentient beings
Who’re enveloped in the forces of five degenerations;
And to open wide the lotus grove of the Buddha’s teaching,
May your reincarnation appear soon as a source of merit for us.
